Gary Wilkerson
June 13th, 1952 - August 16th, 2024
Gary Wilkerson a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother and veteran passed away at home on the Onondaga Nation August 16, 2024 surrounded by his loving wife and children at the age of 72.
Gary was born in Claremore, Oklahoma to JoAnn (Smith) and William John Wilkerson.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Shelby (Doctor). Daughters Margaret (John) Falcon of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, Gina Wilkerson of the Onondaga Nation and Son Kevin (Rena) of the Onondaga Nation. Grandchildren Phoenix and Ruthann of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, Gianna, Kahlia and Lawson Wilkerson of the Onondaga Nation. Brother James (wife Doreen) Wilkerson of Moody Oklahoma, Sisters Sandra (husband Mike) Holbert of Rose Oklahoma and Janette Campos of Pryor Oklahoma. Sister in Law Ann (husband Craig) Drumheller of Cleveland, New York and brother in law Craig Doctor of the Onondaga Nation, Uncle Roy Smith of Oklahoma. Gary leaves behind many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
Gary is proceeded in death by his parents William and JoAnn Wilkerson, Brother Larry Wilkerson, Sister in Law Jane Viola Wilkerson, Sister Susan Gail Wilkerson and mother in law Rosie Doctor, and honorary brothers Jake Chanate of Tahlequah, Oklahoma and Tim Harjo of Ada Oklahoma.
Gary graduated Borger High School, in Borger Texas, then graduated from Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence Kansas and Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Gary proudly served six years in the united states marine corp from 1973-1979. Gary relished his vacations back to the Family homestead in Rose, Oklahoma attending the Cherokee stomp dances and powwows and traveling. He then retired from the Custody Department of the Onondaga County Sheriffs Office in 2013. Gary’s life was marked by service, dedication and love for his family. His legacy will be cherished by those who knew him.
Calling Hours will be held from 10AM to 11AM on Tuesday, August 20th at Ballweg ans Lunsford Funeral Home, 2584 Field Lane LaFayette, NY 13084.
A funeral service will follow at 11AM at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Onondaga County Veteran's Memorial Cemetery.
