Arturo Alfonso Gutierrez

January 16, 1953 - August 17, 2024

Arturo “Art” Gutierrez, 71, of Evergreen, Colorado, died August 17, 2024, following a short illness.

Art was born in Mexicali, Mexico to circus performers Arthur and Blanca (Campa) Gutierrez. He was raised in Los Angeles and graduated from Garfield High School in 1971. Art enlisted in the United States Air Force after a semester of college and met his wife Barbara at their first duty station.

Art and Barbara were married in Mountain Home, Idaho on May 4, 1974. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Central New England College of Technology in 1989 and served for 26 years in the Air Force, retiring in 1998 as a communications specialist with the 302nd Air Wing. His civilian career in telecommunications saw over forty years with AT&T working in long-distance signaling.

Service was a cornerstone of Art’s life, with over 60 years of membership in the Boy Scouts of America. He worked at Lake Arrowhead Boy Scout Camps, now the Hubert Eaton Scout Reservation, as youth staff and went on to serve in many leadership positions at the unit and district levels, as well as with the Archdiocese of Denver Committee on Scouting. Art was awarded the Silver Beaver, the council-level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America, in 2014. He was a member of American Legion Post 2001, Blue Spruce Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus John P. McManamen Council #6905, Wilmot Elementary School WatchDOGS, and the Rotary Club of Conifer. Art was also often found volunteering at events in our mountain area.

His greatest accomplishments include fifty years of marriage to his wife, Barbara; earning a bachelor’s degree as a working adult; the time he almost ran away with the circus; and his four kids, who he bragged about any chance he had.

Art is survived by his wife Barbara; children Amy (Branden) Baker of Morrison, Melissa of Evergreen, David (Haley) of Evergreen, and Sarah (Drew) Thorstenson of Fort Collins; grandchildren Eli Crawford, Austin Baker, Maria Baker, Cayden Gutierrez, and Charlee Gutierrez; his father Arthur Gutierrez of Los Angeles; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Thomas Gutierrez, mother Blanca Campa Hall, and sister Irma Gutierrez.

A funeral Mass will be held at 4:30 PM Friday, September 13 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4291 Evergreen Parkway, followed by a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made in Art’s memory to a charitable cause of the giver’s choice.
