Age 97, of St. Paul
Passed away peacefully on August 20, 2024. Angela “Angie” was born on May 29th, 1927 to Jaroslav and Elizabeth Bastyr. She lived in St. Paul for most of her life graduating from St. Francis de Sales grade school and Monroe High School (Class of 1945). She began playing the accordion at age 9 and became an accomplished player (and singer) performing with several bands and also on her own at many events. In 1946, she met the love of her life, Paul Karel, when he offered to carry her accordion home after a concert for returning World War II servicemen. They were married on October 4th, 1947, and began their love story. Angie was a loving and devoted wife and mother raising 6 children and a life-long friend to many. She was active in the Holy Spirit Parish Altar and Rosary Society and was a volunteer for over 20 years at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She continued playing her accordion for family gatherings and volunteer functions well into her 90’s.
Angie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Paul, her parents Jaroslav and Elizabeth Bastyr, and her granddaughter Paige Bullis. She is survived by her 6 children: Rich (Liz), Dave (Lori), Mike (Jill), Ron (Margaret), Steve (Taffy) and Paula (Rocky) Bullis, 20 grandchildren: Mindy (Latham) Boe, Bryan (Kari), Chris (Brook), Matt (Rachel), Tim (Jess), Julie (Trent), Kristi (Neil) Sjostrom, Dan (Hayley), Brad (Niki), Nick (Celeste), Joe (Sarah), Amy (Sam) Hanson, Dean (Cait), Alyssa (Jon) Ylinen, Sam (Helen), Andy, Adam, Lauren Bullis, and Blake Bullis, 32 Great Grandchildren, Sister-in-law Sharon Karel and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Stonehaven of Eagan Senior Living and Minnesota Hospice for the extraordinary love and care they provided Mom.
Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, August 29th at St. John Vianney Catholic Church (789 17th Avenue North) South St. Paul at 10:30 a.m. Interment following at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at 12:30 pm. Visitation on Wednesday, August 28th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Willwerscheid Funeral Home, 235 Wentworth Avenue W., West St. Paul, and at church 1 hour prior to mass. Memorials preferred to Minnesota Hospice Foundation.
