Betty Joyce Berry Gibson
1937 - 2024
Betty Joyce Berry Gibson gained her much deserved angel wings on August 25 at her home with her family present. She was born in Scott County, Virginia on October 11, 1937 to the late George and Lovana Scalf Berry.
Betty was a graduate of Fairview High School and attended Berea College to become a teacher. However, she ended her training early to come back to Scott County to marry the love of her life, Billy Gibson, on September 12, 1958.
She taught many years for Scott County School System until recently due to COVID constraints. Betty had a very special love and talent for teaching children and will be remembered for her wonderful storytelling and her puppets, Silly Willy and Mr. T.
Betty attended Kaylor's Baptist Church when her health permitted. She was a great cook and enjoyed baking hundreds of cakes over the years for loved ones. Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be sadly missed by all.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Billy, her brother, George Berry and wife Sue Ella, her brother, James Berry and wife Gladys, and her sister, Carolyn Davis and husband, Kenneth.
She is survived by her son, Alan Gibson and wife, Karen; son Phillip Gibson and wife, Alice; beloved granddaughter, Destiny Moore and husband, Brad; precious great-grandson, Sawyer Moore, who gave her "million dollar kisses"; her sister Mary Nell Epps and husband, Gene; several nieces and nephews; her faithful friends, Heather Hurd and Patsy Bostic; life long friend, Geneva Sloan along with a host of friends and caring neighbors.
The family will receive friends from 11am to 1pm on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at Scott County Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow with Pastor David Kern officiating. Music will be provided by Dennis Kirby.
Graveside services will follow at the Neccessary Cemetery on Route 600/Fairvew Road Duffield, VA with Brad Moore, Dr. Stephen Spalding, Bobby Starnes, Rick Farmer, along with her family and friends serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bruce Rhoton, Perry Robinette, and Kent Russell.
