John P. Johnson

John P. Johnson, age 72, of Gloversville, died Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.

He was born March 16, 1952, in Gloversville, the son of Roland and Rose (Caldaroni) Johnson. John graduated from Gloversville High School in 1970, worked as a roofer/carpenter learning from some of the Fulton County’s  best craftsman, and later was employed as a youth division aide for NYSDFY/Tryon School for Boys in Johnstown for 25 years. Throughout his life he continued and honed his roofing and exceptional carpentry skills and was always willing to help out friends and family needing assistance with home projects. In his younger years, John was a Golden Gloves boxer in the local area, a member of the Glove Cities Colonials football team, and until his late 60s pitched on countless softball teams throughout the area. He could still be found regularly watching his sons and friends playing at Meco Ballpark, his favorite venue! If not at the ballpark, he was sipping coffee at Fulton Street Stewarts with his buddies, playing the occasional round of golf, or watching his beloved Yankees. John loved the visits to his sister Victoria in suburban Boston where they would often hit the North End for authentic Italian cuisine. His last trip over included a visit to Fenway Park with his daughters to see the Yankees play the Red Sox on Father’s Day – a special gift, despite the Yanks falling short. 

John is survived by Linda J. Melita-Johnson, the mother of his two daughters; four children, Brian P. Johnson, Jarrod J. Johnson Sr., Abigail R. Johnson and Reagan V. Johnson; four grandchildren, Jayliannah Johnson, Jarrod Johnson Jr., Keaton Johnson and Quinten Johnson; and a sister, Victoria M. Johnson

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a son, Eric Johnson; and a sister, Karen M. Greenhouse-Pancoast.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 to 11 am Thursday, August 29th at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 153 S. Main St., Gloversville, where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00AM with the Rev. Matthew Wetsel officiating.
