Richard “Dick” James Meyer, of Longmont, Colorado, passed away at the age of 92 on August 2, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He valiantly battled cancer for over twelve years and lived life to the fullest, a friend to all.

Richard was born to James and Rose Meyer. He spent his early years in Kansas. He worked with his father in construction and as a golf course caddy in his youth (though he did not take up the game until much later in life). He graduated from high school, graduated from El Dorado Junior College then later joined the U.S. Army - Corps of Engineers in 1953. He attended the Engineers Officers Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He served active duty service until 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1962. During his army days, he was stationed in England, New York, Kansas and Washington, D.C.. He attained the rank of First Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers and received the National Defense Service Medal.

Dick met the love of his life, Lisa, at an Officer's Club dance in Washington, D.C.. They married in 1956. He attended George Washington University. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Kansas State University. They later welcomed three children: James, Lynn and Amy. Their 68-year marriage was a testament to the power of love and commitment.

Dick enjoyed a successful career in industrial engineering and systems analysis in the telecommunications industry. He began his career at Westinghouse and lived in various places as part of a training program. The family moved to Maryland in 1959 where he joined Western Electric / AT&T as a mainframe programmer. He later put his passion for computers, technology and corporate data processes to work as an IT specialist and systems engineer. Dick had leadership roles in the civic association and Lions Club in Joppatowne, Maryland. The family had many adventurous road trips across the country. He transferred from Maryland to Colorado with his family, and later retired from AT&T in 1992 after 33 years of service. He went on to work part-time at Sunset Golf Course for many years.

For over 50 years, Dick held various leadership positions in the Boy Scouts in Maryland and then Colorado. He was a positive role model and influenced the development of character and skills in many a scout. He was never without an extra pair of gloves or hat if a scout needed them on a campout. He earned several awards, including the prestigious Silver Beaver Award (the highest honor given to adults by the BSA).

Dick overcame several health challenges to maintain an active lifestyle. He completed nine Bolder Boulder 10k races (1980 - 1989) and the Boulder Half-Marathon (1983), climbed Long's Peak and was a fixture at several golf courses. He was a member of the American Legion Post 32. He had a love for current technology of all kinds and owned many gadgets. Among his passions were: community involvement, real estate and financial investment, tennis, running, skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, camping, canoeing, golf, mountain biking and travel.

Always trying new things, Dick never stopped learning or making friends. He was an avid reader and skilled handyman. He was known for his unwavering positive attitude, generosity, humor, wisdom, inspiration, adventurous spirit, love of golf and the great outdoors, and gift for storytelling. He was a smart, good-natured man who lived life with integrity and kindness. His “doodles” and witticisms will be missed. Dick is survived by his wife and three children.
