The Island Funeral Home & Crematory
Judith Moyer "Judy" Lundin
March 12th, 1926 - September 9th, 2024
Judith Moyer Lundin of the Cypress, Hilton Head Island passed away peacefully September 9, 2024. She was born March 12, 1926, the daughter of Donald E. Moyer, Sr. and Winifred Capron Moyer.
She is survived by her four children, John H. Lundin (Susan Bigger) of Hilton Head Island SC, Margaret Lundin of Sleepy Hollow NY, Ruth Lundin (Paul Hedberg) of Jamestown NY and David Lundin (Cynthia) of Hermosa Beach CA, grandchildren Anita Lundin of Atascadero CA and Jonathan Lundin (Sara) of Van Nuys CA. and two great grandchildren David Julian and Alexander. She is also survived by her brother Peter Moyer of Incline Village NV and brother-in-law George Lundin of Seattle WA. She was predeceased by her husband, John Milton Lundin, and her brother Donald E. Moyer, Jr.
Judy was born in Abington, PA and moved to Champaign Illinois with her family. She graduated from University High School, Urbana IL and Rockford College. She met John Lundin, who was attending the University of Illinois, and married him on September 11, 1948 in Champaign, Illinois. They raised their family in Homewood, Illinois where they were active members of St. Paul Community Church, and Judy was involved with Girl Scouts and the League of Women Voters. The family enjoyed nature and took camping trips all over the United States, introducing the children to the culture, history and natural attractions of a new region of the country each year. Judy was active in youth exchange, and the family hosted Cathie Tilley, from Australia, for a year in 1968. The family continued their involvement with AFS youth exchange for many years, later hosting Klaudius Henke and making lasting friendships through the program.
John and Judy shared a love of sports cars and together participated in many rallies and meets. Judy was an excellent driver herself, and won 1st place in the SSMSC Snow Gymkhana Ladies Event in 1959 in the couple's Austin Healey. She joined her husband in his passion for Ferraris and the Ferrari Club of America.
In 1971 the family moved to Nassau Bay, Texas and joined the Webster Presbyterian Church. She loved hosting visitors, taking them on tours of NASA, introducing them to the bounties of gulf coast seafood- shrimp, oysters and flounder – as well as other local cuisine. Along with enjoying their concerts, Judy volunteered at the Houston Symphony Orchestra, where she became a valuable assistant in the Symphony office. As her husband had elevated cholesterol, she participated in one of the original cholesterol studies at University of Texas and succeeded in significantly lowering John’s cholesterol levels.
Once moving to the coast, Judy and John took up sailing, enjoying many hours with family and friends sailing in the Gulf of Mexico on their boat MARU. As members of the Galveston Bay Cruising Association they raced in good weather and bad, and participated in many off shore cruises. When they retired to Hilton Head Island in 1986, they sailed their boat from Texas to South Carolina, skirting a hurricane on the way.
After moving to Hilton Head, John and Judy joined First Presbyterian Church. Judy was very active, serving as an elder of Session and in Mission & Outreach, where she oversaw the International Missions, staying in touch with the missionaries the church supported at that time. She was very involved in Presbyterian Women and Church Women United, where she received recognition for her leadership.
Having always enjoyed bird watching and feeding the birds, at the Cypress they joined the Audubon Society to participate in Christmas Bird Counts and enjoyed the flocks of blue birds, chickadees and others that would perch outside their screen porch, insisting on worms, Judy’s homemade suet and other tasty morsels.
Always a gracious hostess, Judy enjoyed organizing social events for the church and for family and friends. She especially enjoyed hosting musicians of the Hilton Head Symphony when they performed on the island.
A memorial service will be held October 25 at 2pm at First Presbyterian Church. Judy will be inurned with John at the First Presbyterian Church columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Mission Fund or to Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club 201 E Park St, Champaign, IL 61820.
