Gary Lee Thompson
January 21st, 1962 - September 11th, 2024
A beloved husband, father, son, brother, grandpa (Baba), uncle, cousin and friend has passed into the presence of his Savior. Gary Lee Thompson, 62, died September 11, 2024 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Gary was born January 21, 1962 in Hot Sulfur Springs, Colorado. His birth mother is unknown but she gave her baby to an adoption agency in Denver, Colorado. Chuck and Fredia Thompson were searching for a baby to adopt and fell in love with Gary the moment they saw him. They adopted Gary and brought him into their home in Colorado Springs when he was 3 months old. Three years later, in 1965, Chuck and Fredia went through that same agency to bring Gary’s little sister, Stephanie Sue (Thompson) Smith into their family.
Gary made Colorado Springs his lifetime home. He graduated from Coronado High School in May 1980. Gary then went to an architectural/drafting college in the Phoenix, Arizona area. He married his high school sweetheart, Vicki Lee (Coltharp) Thompson on December 27, 1980 at Cragmor Christian Reformed Church in Colorado Springs. Gary and Vicki’s older son, Daniel Charles Thompson, was born in Colorado Springs on November 23rd, 1982. Their younger son, Josiah James Thompson, was also born in Colorado Springs on November 1st, 1987.
Gary was a skilled carpenter. He worked with various home building construction companies in the Colorado Springs area in the 1980’s and 90’s. He worked as a Facilities Manager at the Young Life headquarters in Colorado Springs for 10 years, followed by a Facilities management position at Mount Saint Francis Nursing Center.
Gary loved music and sang in every high school choir he could join. After he and Vicki were married, they sang and traveled with a local Christian music group, Victory Voices, for many years. Gary and Vicki remained active at Cragmor Christian Reformed Church where Gary sang in choirs, led boy’s youth groups, served as a Deacon, and headed the sound and AV team.
Gary was an avid sports fan and was loyal to all Colorado sports teams. He also loved all things having to do with cars and racing. The Thompson family spent many hours attending local sporting events and racing events or watching them on TV. Gary enjoyed super hero comic books and movies and at one point was even accused of looking a little bit like Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible). As Gary got older, his hair and beard grew longer so he developed his Santa Claus look to play the part around Christmas. He had great fun when small children approached him with Santa questions in stores and restaurants.
Most of all, Gary loved Jesus and his family. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. Despite many years of battling a multitude of severe, degenerative health issues; he always had room in his big heart for his kids and grandchildren.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Fredia Thompson, and his sweet sister, Stephanie Smith.
Gary is survived by his father, John Charles Thompson; his wife, Vicki Thompson; son, Daniel (Jennifer) Thompson; son, Josiah (Nastassja) Thompson, and 5 beautiful grandchildren, Samuel, Eliot, Clark, Lucius and Karalee.
When it’s all been said and done, there is just one thing that matters. Did I do my best to live for truth?
Did I live my life for you? Lord I’ll live my life for you.
Gary will be dearly missed and will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
There will be a memorial service on Sunday, October 13th at 3:00pm at Cragmor Christian Reformed Church, 1225 Acacia Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80907.
