Kenneth Melvin Renly, 85, passed away on September 4, 2024 from a hemorrhagic stroke.

He was born in Janesville, Wisconsin May 16, 1939 and was known for his selfless service to others.  This was a trait that defined his interactions and endeared him to many.

In his early years, he helped run the dairy farms his family worked. As the eldest sibling, he bore a great deal of responsibility at an early age.  He learned leadership, sacrifice and hard work.  His family and friends recognized these things in his character, knowing Ken could be counted upon to carry-out his promises and to pull up the slack for those who did not.

Ken served honorably in the National Guard before transitioning to the Army Reserves. His early career achievements included being the youngest produce manager at National Food Store in Janesville, Wisconsin, where he was recognized with several awards. Later, he established a long career in Lane County, Oregon, as a journeyman floor mechanic. Well-respected for his expertise and quality workmanship, Ken was a mentor to many apprentices, generously sharing his skills and knowledge.

Ken married Marcia Emeline James in Belvidere, Illinois September 26th, 1958. They shared nearly sixty six wonderful years together. As they raised their three children, Ken had the knack of being everywhere at once. Besides the heavy physical demands of his work, he found time to lead a Cub Scout Pack, tend the family pets (including horses), and help his children with their hobbies and interests.  Later in life he also donated valuable construction services to churches and individuals.

His love of the soil never left him.  Whether growing beautiful flowers in the yard or fruits and vegetables in his abundant garden, many of his happiest hours were spent in muddy boots or on his tractor.  In his deepest self he began and forever would be a farmer.  As with the Midwest farmers that shaped his early life, he would go to any length to help others.  When everyone else was huddled indoors during the blizzard of 1969, Ken was outside shoveling a path to Coburg Road for his neighbors. And there was no tool he did not own or would not get to do the job.

A man of faith, Ken was active at the Eugene First Baptist Church. His love for gardening also reflected his nurturing character, often seen tending to his plants with the same patience and care he offered to people.

Ken is survived by his daughter Cheryl Thomas and her husband Kenneth; sons Steven and his wife Gisele, and Kevin and his wife Julie; as well as seven grandchildren: Derick and Elissa Thomas, Emma, Jillian, Kody and Kaden Renly and Jamie (Renly) Butler. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Ken's life was marked by his commitment to his community, his family, and his faith. He left a legacy of kindness and excellence that will be remembered by all who knew him.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, September 18th, 11:00 at Lane Memorial Gardens.
