In Loving Memory of James (Jimmy) Clarkson Skinner

James (Jimmy) Clarkson Skinner, 97, died Thursday, August, 29, 2024. Born October 17, 1926 in Bishopville, SC, he was the son of the late James Lamuel Skinner and Mary Sue Woodham Skinner. 

 

Jimmy attended Ashwood High School and briefly attended Clemson University before volunteering for the U.S. Navy during WWII at age 17. After being honorably discharged, Jimmy returned home and graduated from the University of South Carolina. After graduation, Jimmy began work at the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Infectious Disease Department. His department was transferred to the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Ga. where he continued to research to find a preventative for malaria. 

 

He is survived by his daughter, Nicola (“Nickie”) Skinner Nickles (Stuart), his grandsons, John Clarkson Nickles and Stuart Alexander Nickles and many beloved nieces and nephews. 

 

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents listed above, his wife of 43 years, Cleo Jones Skinner, and his seven siblings: Thomas Leslie Skinner (Irene), Erinestine Skinner Koiner (Kent), Emily Skinner Asbill (Avery), Ila Skinner Kennedy (Oscar), Dorothy Alvelda Skinner, Virginia Skinner Harris, Kathleen Skinner Smith (Louie). 

 

Jimmy loved his extended family, gardening, woodworking, entertaining and fishing. He will be remembered for his kind and generous nature. 

 

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Mountain View Cemetery in Greer, SC. The family will receive friends after the service. 

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the South Carolina Wildlife Federation (www.scwf.org), or the charity of your choice.
