Catherine Lunn McKenny (nee Schappert) passed away peacefully, on her own terms, after a brief time in hospice care, on September 6, 2024 at the age of 74. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine (nee Krimm) Schappert, and her brother John Gregory (Marilyn) Schappert. She is survived by her sister Susan Schappert and her daughter Rachel Newman (Kelly) and her 7 grandchildren, Benjamin, Charlie, Kendra, Noah, Carter, Dylan, and Eleanor, whom she adored. In addition she is survived by a number of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.   

Catherine enjoyed a long, illustrious career as a Registered Nurse, rising from patient care to administration and finally into Clinical Nurse Education. She began her education by graduating from Philadelphia General Hospital in 1970 with a diploma in Nursing. Catherine later achieved her BSN from LaSalle University in 1982 and earned a Master’s from Widener University in 1991. She brought her knowledge and pursuit of excellence to several local nursing programs, among them Frankford Hospital School of Nursing and Aria Health School of Nursing.

Catherine was an avid music fan and enjoyed discussing politics with friends and family. Her taste in music was varied and ranged from ‘70s pop to contemporary Country & Western. A former high school and college athlete, she enjoyed watching football, particularly the Philadelphia Eagles, but was also happy to watch basketball and baseball. She loved watching classic movies, and could often be found on a weekend with a cat in her lap watching Turner Classic Movies until “the big game” came on. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Catherine’s name to Planned Parenthood.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Catherine’s visitation on Saturday, October 5th from 10:30am - 12pm in McGuinness Funeral Home, located at 34 Hunter Street, Woodbury, NJ, 08096. A celebration of life will take place immediately following the visitation at 12pm.   

Interment will held privately by the family.
