Memorial

Michael J. Firda Jr. passed away peacefully at the Berkshire Rehabilitation Center in Sandisfield Mass on September 16, 2024, at the age of 93.

Born on January 1, 1931, in Holyoke Mass, Michael led a life characterized by dedication, resilience, and love for his country, family and friends. He was a cherished son to the late Mary (Hadvab) and Michael J. Firda Sr. He was a brother to Elizabeth, Mary, Francis, Anne, and John, all of which had pre-deceased him in prior years. He shared a special bond with his niece, Lorrie Hoessler and good friend Shaun Duncan. He leaves nephew Todd Hoessler, niece Karen Firda, nephews David Firda with son Nicholas Firda, Tom Firda, and John Firda with wife Natasha Firda and sister-in-law Irene Firda along with several longtime friends.

An extremely proud veteran, Michael served his country with honor in the United States Army. He bravely and heroically fought in the Korean War where he was wounded on September 22, eventually earning him the honor of the Purple Heart for his dedication to service. His commitment to his nation exemplified his strong sense of duty and courage.

Professionally, Michael earned his trade through the Holyoke School System, becoming a civil engineer for Westover Air Force Base employed as an electrician for 35 years. His expertise and hard work earned him several accommodations through the years and left a lasting impact on the community he served.

Outside of his career, Michael was known for his numerous passions and hobbies. In his youth he enjoyed boating with friends and family where he was an avid water skier at Brunelle's Marina. He had a profound love for organic gardening and woodworking. Michael took immense pride in his home, which he designed and had built with his family in mind. In younger days family picnics and baseball games in his backyard were a regular occurrence during summer months, creating countless cherished memories.

Michael's adventurous spirit took him to many destinations. One of his favorite places was Las Vegas Nevada, where he first explored with his brother-in-law Robert Hoessler Jr; later encouraging other family members to see the sights of places such as the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Mt. Charleston, and Lake Mead. Rhoden Island was another favorite spot, visiting the Newport Mansions, Fort Wetherill, Fort Adams and The Tall Ships. At the age of 92, he traveled to Colorado with good friend Shaun Duncan in September of 2023 to participate in the 100th anniversary of the Korean War. These travels, along with the joy of exploring new places, enriched his life with family and friends.

Visitation to honor Michael's life will take place on Tuesday, September 24, from 10-11 a.m. at Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home, followed by a service at 11 a.m. Burial will proceed at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with the dignity and respect he so richly deserves.

Michael J. Firda, Jr’s life was a testament to hard work, loyalty, and love for family and friends. His legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
