Elizabeth "Anne" Anne McKown
June 6th, 1938 - September 16th, 2024
Anne McKown, of Aurora, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on September 16, 2024.
Born on June 6, 1938, in Muncie, Indiana, to Corbett McClellan and Mary Anne (Martin) Ogborne, Anne attended Burris Laboratory School for high school and began her college journey at Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio. She later transferred to Indiana University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Recreation in 1960, along with a teaching certificate. Anne was an active member of Alpha Phi sorority and pursued additional post-graduate work at Michigan State University, Western Michigan University, the University of Colorado, and Colorado State University.
It was at Indiana University that Anne met her future husband, Larry McKown. They married in the summer of 1960, and soon after, moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, where Anne began her career as a recreation supervisor, later transitioning into teaching physical education and health. In 1972, the family relocated to Colorado, where Anne continued her work as a recreation supervisor for Aurora Parks & Recreation, a role she held for 30 years. Her passion for youth development led her to serve on numerous related committees and task forces throughout her career.
A devoted Disney fan, Anne took multiple trips to Disney World and collected a wide array of Disney memorabilia. She delighted in decorating her home for the holidays, with Christmas holding a special place in her heart. Anne's travels took her to the enchanting Christmas markets of Germany and Switzerland, and she also cherished visits to the UK, Alaska, and France.
Anne had a gift for finding joy in everyday moments. She loved thrifting, antiquing, and attending garage sales, and she treasured time spent with friends. A sports enthusiast, she followed professional teams closely, both in person and on television. Above all, she found the greatest joy in supporting her grandson Gavin's baseball career, rarely missing one of his high school games.
Anne's kindness and generosity were felt by many. Her home was always open to friends and family, as well as animals in need. She was a friend to everyone she met and had a true gift for making people feel welcome and cared for.
Anne is survived by her daughter, Mary Anne; her son, Christopher (Lisa); her beloved grandson, Gavin, and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Larry, her son, Patrick, and her brother, John “Jack” Mc Clellan.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Hudson Gardens (The Inn & Backyard) in Littleton, Colorado on Sunday, October 27, 2024 at 12 noon. Refreshments will be provided.
