Roland McIntyre Cooke, born on May 2, 1961, in Newport, OR, left this world on September 25, 2024, in Portland, OR after a six year battle against cancer that he fought with grace and fortitude. He brings us all to reflect on a life well-lived, marked by kindness, generosity, humor, ambition, and energy.

Survived by his husband of 34 years, David Grindstaff, and their cherished son Walker Cooke, Roland’s legacy is also carried forward by his mother, Connie (Mitchell) Cooke; his siblings, Connie Beth (Cooke) Shull, Michael Cooke, LaRae (Cooke) Severson and nephew Daniel Shull and niece Sara (Shull) Biesen; in-laws Luvern Shull, Dan Severson, Sally Nelson, Cally (Grindstaff) Roach, and Will Grindstaff. He leaves behind many adoring cousins and extended family members. Roland was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Cooke, and nephew Samuel Shull.

Roland earned his BS in Physics from Northwest Nazarene University in 1984 and a MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Idaho in 1991. His professional career was just as diverse and vibrant as he was. His passion for teaching and technology shone through in his years as a Communications Engineer with the Bonneville Power Administration and as a Professor of Information Technology/Computer Science at College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, Seattle Central Community College and Clark College in Vancouver, WA. He took great pride in watching students succeed in their endeavors.

Roland’s enthusiasm for life didn't stop at his career. He was a real estate aficionado, purchasing and remodeling 25 homes throughout his life. His love for the slopes saw him as an avid skier in his younger years, while his passion for the water led him to cherish every moment spent boating. His adventurous spirit lead him to take a year-long trip backpacking trip through Europe where he learned to speak German and made many friends. Yet perhaps his proudest role was as a father, where he beamed with pride at Walker's acting and singing pursuits, attending every performance with joy and admiration.

In honor of Roland’s life and generosity, the family kindly asks that you consider making a donation to End of Life Choices Oregon or the Roland Cooke Patient Advocacy Program

As we remember Roland, let's celebrate his vivacious spirit, humor, and the countless lives he touched. Rest easy, Roland. You've left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing you.
