Martha was born on June 2, 1938 in Atlanta, Georgia to a large and loving family. She graduated from Chamblee High School in 1956 and then went to work in various jobs around the Atlanta area. It was at one of these jobs, working at Peachtree Road Pharmacy, that she met her future husband, Charles Bowles. Charles and Martha soon welcomed their first son, Charles, Jr. and 2 years later their second son, Chris. In 1964, Martha and Charles moved their family to Centerville, Georgia where Charles opened Centerville Drugs. Martha went to work at Lindsey Elementary School in Warner Robins, Georgia. She later worked at Centerville Elementary School, Pearl Stephens Alternative School and the Houston County Board of Education home office in Perry, Georgia. Martha maintained a loving, caring and happy home for her entire life. She enjoyed canning and preserving fresh food for her family and was an avid cook and homemaker. She loved gardening and maintaining a vibrant yard. During the time in which her sons were younger, Martha served as a team mother, assisted with Vacation Bible School and Sunday School and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross.
