Suzanne "Sue" Marie Propst
May 4th, 1946 - September 30th, 2024
Suzanne “Sue” Marie Propst passed away peacefully in her home on September 30, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.
Sue was born on May 4, 1946, in Maryville, Missouri. She was the youngest of four children born to Francis and Edna (Sturm) Shriver. She attended Mount Vernon Academy for high school, followed by Northwest Missouri State University where she received a Bachelor of Science in teaching and library science in 1967. It was at Northwest Missouri State that she met her husband of 57 years, Floyd Edward “Ed” Propst. They were married at St. Francis Church on August 12, 1967. Upon graduation, Sue and Ed moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa where they both began teaching for Council Bluffs Schools. Sue was a born teacher. Her honesty, sense of humor, and trustworthiness helped her to form a strong connection with her students while teaching at both Edison Jr. High and then Kirn Jr. High for many years. She positively impacted the lives of many students during this time and eventually was runner-up for teacher of the year for the state of Iowa. Sue received her master’s degree in elementary school administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1971. She eventually moved to staff development for Council Bluffs School district, where she worked for several years. In 1993, Sue became principal at St. Albert Catholic elementary school. In 1998 Sue made a career shift and went to work at IBM for several years. She eventually moved on to real estate where she worked at Key Real Estate and later NP Dodge, retiring in 2012.
Sue and Ed loved to travel. They visited every state in the U.S., hitting their 50th state for their 50th anniversary. They took many unforgettable trips, including a bus tour of Europe, a cruise to Italy, and trips to Mexico and Great Britain. They went on many memorable ski trips with friends and loved spending many summer days with dear friends at Spirit Lake, Iowa.
In 1975 Sue and Ed opened their home to Richard Williams, a past student of Sue’s, who stayed with them his senior year. They maintain a special friendship to this day.
After many years, Sue and Ed welcomed a daughter, Emily (Propst) Wenzinger on December 2, 1986. They enjoyed the special years of sports, family trips, and countless memories with family and friends. On May 14, 2010, they welcomed a son-in-law, Michael Wenzinger and on December 7, 2015, twin grandsons, Alex and Jacob Wenzinger. Sue and Ed moved to Lexington, South Carolina the November before the boys were born. They have loved every second of being grandparents and enjoyed being there for all their big and small events. One of their most special memories was teaching their grandsons for preschool during COVID. Sue was a truly amazing grandma.
Sue loved being an active member of her community. She made many lifelong friends in several organizations, including PTO, the “Old Hags Club,” Network CB, Toast Masters, and the Red Hat Ladies. Sue made friends easily. She was dependable, loyal, endearing, funny, witty, and caring. She was a true friend to many, and she valued her friendships dearly.
Sue is survived by her husband Ed Propst; daughter Emily (Propst) Wenzinger; son-in-law Michael Wenzinger; grandsons Alex and Jacob Wenzinger; sister-in-law Mary (Ron) Hays; and brothers-in-law Bill (Connie) Propst, Dick Kuntz, and Don Roberts; Richard Williams; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents; siblings Dorothy (Shriver) Roberts, Jack Shriver, and Nancy (Shriver) Kuntz; brothers-in-law Bob Propst, Dean Propst, and Dennis Propst.
