Dr Margaret White Jones was born on December 9, 1930, in Harlem, New York to Madie White, a domestic worker. She was raised in Stamford, Connecticut where she attended Stamford High School and graduated with honors. Margaret joined the army as a WAC (Women Army Corps), a very bold move at the time for a young black woman. She completed her basic training and was stationed at Fort Custer Michigan, where she met Corporal Richard Jones. Six months later they married. Together they had two children, Michelle Rene and Richard Jr. Richard Jones was stationed in Germany, at New York, California and finally Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. In 1961, Richard was killed during a routine flight mission when his plane caught fire and crashed.

Margaret, a widow with two young children, made another bold move by quitting her job and enrolled at University of Arizona as a full-time student. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration and was elected a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. Margaret went on to attain master’s degree in social work from Denver University and finally, a Doctorate in Psychology from the University of Arizona.

Dr Jones’ many awards include The Woodrow Wilson Fellow, Outstanding Citizen of Tucson from the Mayor, a medal for Outstanding Public Service, Arizona Daily Star Jefferson Award, Certificate of Appreciation from the Mayor of Tucson and Unsung Heroine from the Black Women’s Task Force.
