Patrick "Pat" Russell McDowell
February 18th, 1951 - September 20th, 2024
It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Patrick Russell McDowell, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Born on February 18, 1951, in Los Angeles, California, Pat was the third of five children born to Gordon and Patsy McDowell. He grew up surrounded by family and developed a strong work ethic, graduating from Lynwood High School in 1969.
At 18, Pat joined the Southern Pacific Railroad, where his passion for trains led him to a successful career as a locomotive engineer. He dedicated many years to this profession, earning the respect of his colleagues and making lasting memories on the rails.
In 1974, Pat became a Reserve Deputy with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, inspired by his sister Robin, who worked as a clerk in the department. It was through Robin that Pat met Josta, a divorced mother with a daughter, Christal. Pat and Josta fell in love and married on December 20, 1975. Together, they welcomed two more children, Amber and Steven, and Pat embraced his role as a father to Jason from a previous relationship.
The McDowell family created a warm and nurturing home in Buena Park, California, filled with laughter and cherished memories. They hosted numerous parties for friends and family, including Fourth of July and Christmas celebrations, often inviting local police department staff to join in while on duty, as Josta worked at the department.
In 2016, after a fulfilling career, Pat and Josta retired and moved to Star, Idaho, where they enjoyed life surrounded by nature and new adventures.
In July of 2024, Pat was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. With friends and family by his side, he faced his illness with courage and grace, passing away on September 20, 2024.
Pat will be remembered for his kindness, strong spirit, and unwavering dedication to his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Josta; children Christal, Amber, Steven, Jason, and son-in-law Brian; grandchildren Alex, Joey, Bradley, Taylor, Zachary, Arthur, and Killian; great-grandchildren Blakely, Naia, Nova, and Stellan; siblings Robin and Dennis; and a host of friends and family who loved him dearly.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held on October 18, 2024, at Eagle Christian Church in Star, Idaho. Flowers can be sent to the church.
He will be profoundly missed but will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
