James "Mike" Michael Guffey, born December 5, 1956, in Owensboro, Kentucky, passed away on October 6, 2024, at Frankfort Regional Hospital in Frankfort, Kentucky, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, loyalty, and love. He was 67 years old.
Mike was a graduate of the University of Kentucky. He was an avid golfer who loved the game. A respected Environmental Engineer for the State of Kentucky's Energy & Environmental Department, Mike devoted his career to safeguarding the natural resources and environmental integrity of his beloved state. His commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection was a testament to his deep-rooted passion for the earth and its future. Mike earned his bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, a foundation that catalyzed his illustrious and impactful career. He brought innovative solutions and unwavering integrity to his work, earning the admiration and respect of colleagues and community members alike.
Outside of his professional sphere, Mike cherished spending quality moments with his family and loved ones. He was survived by his two devoted sisters, Debra Meng of Louisville, Kentucky, and Nancy Shuler (Dan) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His nieces; Ann Taylor Lashbrook-Wright, Lucy Lashbrook-Kaplan, his nephew; Stephen Shuler. He shared a loving and fulfilling life with his partner of 20 years, Marian Elizabeth "Mabeth" Kirkpatrick, whose companionship was a profound source of joy and support.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Wilson Guffey and Betsy Barr Leibfreid, whose guidance and love undoubtedly shaped the man he became. Mike will always be remembered as a man of integrity and compassion, whose life served as an inspiration and whose memory will forever be cherished. The community he touched is richer for his presence and diminished by his passing. While ceremony details are forthcoming, those wishing to express their condolences or share memories are encouraged to do so to honor his remarkable life and legacy.
