James "Jim" Eugene Kirkland
May 13th, 1934 - October 9th, 2024
Mr. James “Jim” Eugene Kirkland, 90, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2024 in Aiken, SC. He was a loving father and a devoted grandfather. Jim was born on May 13, 1934 in Batesburg, SC. He was the son of the late Chester Bryon Kirkland and Verdery Barton Kirkland.
Jim grew up in New Holland, SC, and joined the Navy at 18. He served his country from 1952 until June 9, 1960. Jim fought in the Korean War aboard the USS Hancock. After receiving an honorable discharge, he resided in Aiken and New Ellenton and crafted his skill as a pipefitter. He was a 50-year member of the UA Local 150 – Augusta, and a life member of the Aiken Ancient Free Masons, Lodge No. 156.
He was preceded in death by his father, Chester Bryon Kirkland; mother, Verdery Barton Kirkland; wife, Letitia Brodie Kirkland; and brother, Lenail Kirkland. He is survived by his brother, Glen Kirkland; his children, Bryon Kirkland, Michael Kirkland (Amanda Akins), Amy Kirkland, and Carolyn Kirkland; his grandchildren, Melanie Kirkland, Zoey Hall, Sam Radford (Drew), Brylee Carson, Cole Matthews, Asa Matthews, Wyatt Matthews; and his great-grandchildren, Addie Radford, Noah Radford, Hayden Radford, and Myles Matthews.
Jim loved to fish and spend time in his garden. He enjoyed visiting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and supporting them in all their activities.
Jim will always be remembered as a beloved Brother, Daddy, and Papa.
A graveside service and interment of ashes will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Southlawn Cemetery, 4524 Whiskey Rd, Aiken, SC 29803.
