Brian ""Wolfy"" D. Trunk
February 9th, 1952 - September 11th, 2024
Beloved father, brother, friend, public servant and vocalist extrodanaire!
Gig Harbor, Washington - Brian D. Trunk, affectionately known as "Wolfy", entered eternal rest September 11, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. Born in Worthington, Minnesota, the Midwest was close to his heart. Road trips often included a stop at the beloved Wall Drug Store in South Dakota. At 5 years of age, the family moved to sunny Santa Ana, California where he first discovered his love of biking, something he never lost. He graduated from Mater Dei Catholic High School in 1970.After serving a term in the U.S. Coast Guard, Brian worked as a civilian mariner on the Gulf of Mexico before joining the Tacoma Fire Department. Brian retired from the Department in April 2010 after serving 30 years in multiple roles including: firefighter, paramedic, fireboat pilot and inspector with the Fire Prevention Bureau. A coworker had this to say about Brian: "His unconventional approach to our shared professional duties was both refreshing and appreciated. His analytical approach to emergency medical treatment served us very well in difficult situations. His depth of knowledge and ability to recall the fire codes was nothing short of encyclopedic. Most of all, his wry sense of humor was always appreciated. Sometimes he would break out in song with his powerful Basso Profundo baritone voice, other times he would quietly add a suggestion that had eluded the rest of the staff at Prevention. He was unique, bright, and vibrant-in short, a good friend and colleague."An accomplished vocalist, Brian performed with Tacoma Symphony Voices, Tacoma Opera, Saint Luke's Episcopal Church and others. He also volunteered in Tacoma Fire Department's Honor Guard singing the National Anthem at 9/11 memorials and other gatherings.During Brian's final four years of life, he struggled bravely with numerous ailments to include 2 primary cancers and 13 hospitalizations. Throughout it all, he never lost the dry and sarcastic wit that-as family members sometimes joked-presented a danger to both himself and others. His loss is deeply felt.Brian is survived by his daughter Karena (Ted) Schlatter, son Karl Trunk (Juliana Couto), 4 grandchildren and step grandchildren, brothers Tom (Roseanne) Trunk, Dale Trunk (John Prescott), sisters Connie Rickenbacher-Trunk (Tim Cassaw), Nancy (John) Richardson and a host of nieces and nephews.Thursday Oct 24th, 7 p.m.- Vigil/Rosary.Friday Oct 25th, 11 a.m.- Funeral Mass reception immediately following in the church hall.
