Richard A Haddad, formerly of Tuxedo, New York, loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in Arlington, Virginia on October 13, 2024.

He was born in 1934 in Brooklyn, New York to Elizabeth Kahwaty Haddad and Albert Haddad, both immigrants from Aleppo, Syria. He was predeceased his wife, Marion E. Haddad, in 2022.

He is survived by his three children, Richard G. (Pamela), Gerard (Linda) and Elizabeth (Brett Richardson), grandchildren Kathryn, William, Christopher, Rhiannon, Richard P, Ryan, Amelia, Genna and Aidan, two great-grandchildren Gerard and William, and his sister Mariette Mokarry, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Growing up in Park Slope, Brooklyn, he was surrounded by the Syrian immigrant community where everyone knew everyone. It was the age of trollies, stoop ball and stick ball, where some bragged that they could hit the “spaldeen” “two sewers.”  He attended St. Savior Catholic elementary school and graduated in 1953 from St Augustine Catholic Diocesan high school where he was editor-in-chief of the high school newspaper, The Lance.

He went on to Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, where he earned bachelor’s, masters and  PhD degrees in electrical engineering. He stayed at Brooklyn Polytechnic until 1995 as a professor specializing in digital signal processing and publishing three textbooks on the subject. Over the course of his career, he published over 40 peer reviewed articles in professional journals and presented papers at conferences all over the world. He advised many PhD students with their dissertations throughout his career.  He also consulted for many years for Bell Labs and the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center.

In 1968, the family moved from Brooklyn to Tuxedo, New York, where he and Marion raised their three children. He had spent several years designing the home he had imagined, and in which they lived for 54 years.  They lived in a wonderful community with neighbors they cherished.

In 1978, he took a sabbatical to teach overseas, moving the family to Algeria for a two-year adventure. He, Marion and the kids met great friends from around the world who would be bound together by this experience forever. While there, he and Marion caught the travel bug and over the coming decades, they traveled throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Central America.

In 1985, he was invited to teach at Lanzhou University at a time when few westerners visited western China. He found the people there to be gracious and interested in learning more about the West.

In 1996, he began a new phase of his career, leaving Brooklyn Poly after 42 years and joining New Jersey Institute of Technology as Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He continued to teach at NJIT until 2013 at age 79.

Foremost in his life, he was a teacher and mentor to so many colleagues, students, friends and family.

In his spare time, he was a model ship builder, model railroad builder, and dollhouse builder, and was often found in his study working on his next creation.  He was also a student of history throughout his life, revealed by the stacks of books next to his bed, and the New York Times read cover-to-cover daily.

In the latter part of his life, his greatest joy was to spend time with his grandchildren, participating in their lives and achievements, from first steps to dance performances, softball, soccer, basketball games and graduations, the latter of which he was most proud.
