Carl Edmun Grooms, 74, of Lexington, SC, took his final bow on October 14, 2024, leaving behind a life full of laughter, music, and unforgettable memories.

Born on September 25, 1950, Carl spent his years bringing joy, generosity, and a dash of mischief to everyone lucky enough to know him.

A proud ’69 graduate of Columbia High School, Carl went on to serve his country with honor as a Marine for three years. His time in the Corps was a testament to his dedication and grit—qualities that shone through in everything he did.

After his military service, Carl found his calling as a Journeyman Plumber, where his sharp wit, skillful hands, and tireless work ethic earned him respect and admiration. But while his hands built solid foundations, his heart belonged to Bluegrass.

As the founder of The Parking Lot Pickers, Carl’s love of music echoed through parking lots, porches, and anywhere else a washtub could be played. Whether fishing at Lake Murray, crabbing in Charleston, or simply enjoying the beauty of the world around him, he knew how to live life in full color—and with plenty of rhythm. A faithful member of Mt. Ebal Baptist Church, Carl was a constant source of joy in his community, always lighting up the room with his smile and spreading kindness wherever he went.

He leaves behind his sisters, Roberta “Bobbi” Andersen and Helen Rivers, who will forever remember his warmth and wit. Carl joins his beloved parents, Earl E. Grooms and Reba Lee Farmer Grooms, in the heavenly jam session they surely have going on.

A celebration of Carl’s life will be held Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 11 AM, Mt. Ebal Baptist Church, 5 Lion Loop, Batesburg-Leesville, SC 29006,  followed by a luncheon reception and—of course—a Bluegrass concert, because no send-off for Crazy Carl would be complete without some good music.

In lieu of flowers, Carl would love for donations to be made to Mt. Ebal Baptist Church or a charity of your choice. Keep his legacy of generosity, music, and fun alive—just as he lived.
