Timothy Rowe Frederick
January 25th, 1945 - October 22nd, 2024
Timothy Rowe Frederick was born on January 25, 1945, in Olympia, Washington, to Fredrick Jennings Shaw and Mary Ann (Rowe) Shaw. Tim passed away on October 22, 2024, in Lacey, Washington, surrounded by loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. He grew up in Olympia with his adoptive father, Walter Frederick, his mother, Mary Ann, and his beloved younger sister, Trudy. As a child, Tim enjoyed playing baseball, participating in Boy Scouts, leading neighborhood adventures with friends, and camping at Hood Canal with family.
Tim married Sarah C. Settle in 1964. They lived in Bellingham, WA, while he completed his undergraduate studies at Western Washington University. Later, the couple moved to Missoula, MT, where Tim pursued a Master’s degree in History. After school, they returned to Olympia, where Tim began his career with several roles before joining the Washington State Division of Archives as Senior State Archivist for Special Projects. Tim and Sarah welcomed their first daughter, Amy, in 1965, followed by their second daughter, Adriann, in 1973.
Throughout his career, Tim dedicated himself to the field of oral history, particularly focusing on giving voice to common men, women, and ethnic minorities. He was instrumental in the Washington State Bicentennial Celebration’s oral history projects, overseeing initiatives that honored the stories of communities through the Black, Filipino, Kittitas, Pacific & Wahkiakum, and Whatcom Projects. Tim also spearheaded the centralization of records management systems and archival preservation efforts for local governments across the state.
Outside his work, Tim had a wide range of interests. He was passionate about music, literature, WWI memorabilia, firearms, car racing, MOPAR vehicles, falconry, pigeons, nature, art, and fitness. Later in life, he took pride in home improvement projects. Tim’s enthusiasm for life was boundless, embracing each new experience and never letting age or illness hinder his adventurous spirit.
Tim is preceded in death by his father, Walter C. Frederick; mother, Mary Ann Frederick; biological father, Fred Shaw; and beloved brother, Greg Shaw. He is survived by his daughters, Amy Frederick and Adriann Theis (Bryan); his supportive former wife, Sarah Frederick; and his siblings: Trudy Valdez (Izzy), Karren Tandberg, Linda Ray (Glenn), Steve Shaw (Deanna), Nancy Shaw, Jennifer Gilbert, Christine Sonntag, and Lance Shaw (Sabrina). He is also remembered by his cherished grandchildren, Nolan “Cole” Jordan and Reilly Jordan, and his many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Tim’s life will be held on November 16, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at South Sound Manor, located at 455 North Street SE, Tumwater, WA 98501, with fellowship, drinks, and light fare following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Audobon Washington (wa.audobon.org) that protects birds and the places they need to live.
