Loretta Byrl Dixon
May 26th, 1931 - October 23rd, 2024
Loretta was known for her baking, and it was rare to not have a homemade dessert after dinner. She was an avid reader and gardener, she enjoyed a good game of gin rummy with her kids and grandchildren.
Loretta B. Dixon passed away peacefully on the morning of October 23, 2024, in Edmonds, with family at her side. Born in May 1931 in Cavalier, North Dakota to Carl and Viola (Rushford) Kuehner, Loretta spent her childhood growing up in Walhalla, North Dakota and was the oldest of three siblings (Marie and Robert). Loretta graduated from Walhalla High School and left for Washington state in the early 1950s where she worked as a telephone operator in downtown Seattle. Loretta would spend the rest of her life in the Puget Sound area.
In 1954, she met Robert (Bob) Dixon of Bellingham and married that year. Loretta and Bob first settled in Queen Ann where they had three daughters, Kim, Debra, and Mary. In 1959, the family moved to Lynnwood where Susan and Michael were added to the family. Loretta stayed home to raise the five children and numerous pets. Loretta and Bob were founding members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church of Lynnwood in 1962 and were actively involved in the parish including volunteering with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Loretta was a member of the altar society guild.
In her leisure time, Loretta was known for her baking, and it was rare to not have a homemade dessert after dinner. She was an avid reader and gardener, she enjoyed a good game of gin rummy with her kids and grandchildren, and always had a crossword or word search book in her hand. She enjoyed traveling, especially returning to her hometown of Walhalla to visit family and attend class reunions and seeing relatives in Canada. Cherished memories of her children growing up were camping, especially the annual summer vacation at Lake Osoyoos State Park in eastern Washington, trips to Edmonds Beach, hiking, and picking berries.
Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, who passed away in 2023 after 68 years of marriage, her mother Viola, sister Marie, and stepfather Percy Pitcher. Loretta is survived by her five children: Kim Dawson (late husband Jack), Debra Jones (husband John and daughter Amanda), Mary Albertsen (fiancé Tom Dahlen), Susan Piper (husband Corbin and son Ronan), and Michael Dixon, along with her brother Robert Pitcher (wife Marjie and daughter Carrie). The childhood friendships Loretta developed were lifelong including Gladys Dalzell of Seattle, and the late Solveig Hornung and Cece Menier of Walhalla. While living in Lynnwood, she met the late Margaret Renfro who became a most cherished friend.
A rosary prayer service will begin at 10:15 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 6511-176th St SW, Lynnwood, on November 13, 2024. The family welcomes all who knew Loretta to join them in honoring her memory and expressing condolences. Loretta will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Rest in peace, dear Mom.
