George William Bechtel
September 14th, 1941 - October 27th, 2024
With wrenches in hand, George William "Butch" Bechtel, aged 83, drove one last time to that great garage in the sky on October 27, 2024, in Warner Robins, Georgia. Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on September 14, 1941, George lived a life full of horsepower and humor—always knowing how to fine-tune an engine or lift the spirits of those around him with a perfectly timed joke. A memorial service will be held at Grace Baptist Church, 3151 Peach Pkwy, Fort Valley, GA 31030, Friday, November 1, 2024 at 1:00 PM. Pastor Justin Talbert will officiate. In true George style, the family suggests you skip the bouquets and instead make a donation to the American Cancer Society in his name—a nod to his love of caring for those he cherished most. If you choose to send flowers, please send them to Grace Baptist Church, 3151 Peach Pkwy, Fort Valley, GA 31030.
George, a skilled diesel mechanic, spent many years at Mack Trucks, where he earned not only a paycheck but a reputation as a friend to anyone with a transmission problem and an ever-reliable source of pranks on a long shift. George’s life was characterized by his unique combination of a keen intellect and an undeniable sense of humor, a hallmark of his personality. Fondly remembered as a prankster, His knack for repairing everything brought forth the quote he would always say, "If man made it, you can fix it" or " hit it boy, it ain't a pocket watch."
George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sarah Kohr Bechtel, and his siblings Ken Bechtel, Suzie Bechtel, and Katherine Bechtel. He leaves behind a loving family who inherited his ability to fix what’s broken, in machines and in hearts: his children Joseph (Sheila) Bechtel, Timothy L. (Alesia) Bechtel, Sr., and Michelle (Randy) Francis. His legacy further extends to his 10 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, surviving siblings Joseph "Joe" Bechtel, Ed Bechtel, Arthur "Ook" Bechtel, and Jeff Bechtel. He also leaves behind his beloved aunt, Ethel Stevens and Mac, his beloved canine companion
George’s stories, laughter, and legacy will be honored in private by family and friends. Memories and condolences can be shared through a donation or perhaps by telling a well-timed joke in his honor. A man of great wisdom and a purveyor of comforting words, he was known to say, "Say 'Goodnight', never say 'goodbye', because goodbye is forever." These words encapsulate his approach to life, always leaving an open door for new beginnings and cherished connections.
