Memorial

Exactly 93 years from the day she was born, our dear Mom passed from this life to her heavenly home.  Arlene Joyce Horton was born on October 14, 1931, in Little Falls, MN, a small town on the banks of the Mississippi River, in the central part of the state.  She was the youngest of six children born to Mabel and Murray Horton.  She died on October 14, 2024, in Lynnwood, WA.

Arlene recalled her early years of living in a house at Camp Ripley, in Little Falls, while her father was serving in the National Guard. She remembered walking to school with her older sister, Delores, to the one room schoolhouse they attended in the primary grades.

With the onset of WWII, the Horton family uprooted from Minnesota and moved west to Spokane, WA.  Two years later, better employment opportunities forced yet another move and the family settled in Seattle, WA.  Arlene attended grades 7-9 at Hamilton Junior High, and graduated from Lincoln High School, the Class of 1949.

In the fall of 1951, Arlene and her best friend Dolly were attending a dance at the popular gathering spot, Burt Lindgren's, on the Bothell Highway in North Seattle.  It was at this dance where the two girls met two young men, Hal and Vern.  Vern danced with Dolly first but asked her for Arlene's phone number.  Six months later, on April 5, 1952, Vernon Meissner and Arlene Horton were wed, a marriage that would last 51 years with many outdoor adventures until Vern's death in 2003.  Four children were born in that marriage, two boys and two girls.  Arlene was not only a mother and a homemaker but worked outside the home at Swedish Hospital in various administrative capacities, retiring in 1990.

At midlife, and trying to stay fit, Arlene took up distance running and participated in 5K races.  She also began golfing, which became a passion of hers and participated with a league of women golfers, the Jackson Jills, at Jackson Golf Course, and even hit a hole-in-one on May 17, 2007!    She loved watching baseball, golf and football on TV, playing bridge, attending circle at church and doing crossword puzzles.

As fate would have it, Arlene found love again.  She met Robert (Bob) Barley in 2009, and they married on February 13, 2010.  They enjoyed each other's companionship and traveled not only in the US but in Europe as well, and did bus trips downtown to watch sporting events, attended church and met with friends to play bridge.

After a life well-lived, Arlene passed away peacefully and with dignity, something she had hoped to achieve.  She is survived by her husband, Bob Barley, sons Gary Meissner (Mick) of Mountlake Terrace, WA; Steven Meissner (Erin)of Anacortes, WA; daughters Kelly Urdahl of Oldtown, ID and Gayle Gross of Wrangell, AK as well as grandchildren Stephanie Bertges, Adam Meissner (Chrystal), Gregg Meissner (Clarissa), Nathan Urdahl (Erin), Brandon Meissner (Casey), John Meissner, great-grandchildren Isabelle Bertges, Bjoern Bertges, Mason Meissner, Makena Meissner, Yvaine Urdahl, Sylvia Urdahl, step-daughters Linda, Susan and Lauren and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her first husband Vernon Meissner, a granddaughter Lindsey Urdahl, sons-in-law Harvey Gross and Rance Urdahl, parents Mabel and Murray, brothers Ozzie and Howard and sisters Marjorie, Geraldine and Delores.

A memorial and an inurnment of ashes will be held at a later date.
