It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Shaun Delaine Thomas (née Vanderpool), who left this world on November 5, 2024, at her home in Olympia, Washington. Born on February 24, 1956, in Port Angeles, Washington, Shaun was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and educator, whose life was a testament to compassion and intellect.

Shaun spent her lifetime deeply committed to education and nurturing those around her. After years of balancing work, family, and studies, she earned her Master of Education from Goddard College in 2001. Though her pursuit of a PhD was interrupted by the onset of Alzheimer's in her early 50s, her legacy as an inspired teacher remains undiminished. Shaun's classrooms, ranging from kindergarten to college level, became nurturing spaces filled with love, kindness, and intellectual curiosity.

She was known for her brilliant mind and even more so for her generous heart, embodying traits of kindness, loyalty, and consideration in all endeavors. Her passion for subjects as diverse as nature, music, science, cinema, and poetry were matched by her commitment to economic and educational justice — values she seamlessly integrated into her teaching.

Shaun’s personal life was as rich and fulfilling as her professional one. She found true love and companionship with her husband, Thomas, who she married in August 2002. Together, they shared a life filled with poetry and spiritual growth, pursuits they passionately shared together. Shaun also encouraged the artistic and intellectual development of her son and daughter, along with everyone else she came to know. Social justice was not a lofty intellectual goal, but a heartfelt daily practice, seen in countless positive actions. Shaun met every challenge with courage and hope.

Shaun is survived by her devoted husband, Thomas, her beloved daughter Megan, and her cherished grandsons, Zane and Ronan. She is also survived by her sister, June Acorn, and her mother, Veronica Hernandes. Shaun was preceded in death by her son, Johnny Rowland, and her brothers, Jimmy and Donny, as well as her father, John Vanderpool. Shaun’s love of family was unconditional, and she was a fierce protector when any were threatened, externally or by their own actions. Throughout her life, she profoundly demonstrated her belief in forgiveness, quickly given, without regret or resentment.

Her family invites friends and loved ones to honor Shaun’s memory not only by reflecting on her influence but also by continuing causes she passionately supported. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders, Feeding America, or the Nature Conservancy.

As we contemplate the memory of Delaine Thomas, we celebrate a remarkable life marked by achievement, love, and unwavering dedication to the good of others. May her soul rest in peace, and her spirit continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know her.
