Mary Frances Caruso

Mary Frances *Fannie* Caruso (née DeBerry) passed away on November 7, 2024. She was 73.
Fannie was born in Fairmont, WV to Margaret and James DeBerry. Fannie graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA, where she met the love of her life, Dr. Peter Caruso. They settled in Wheeling, WV where they raised their family. In 2000, they moved to Hilton Head Island, SC. Fannie was known for her warm hospitality and devoted caregiving as a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and grandmother.
As a devout Catholic, Fannie was always involved with her local church and lived her life as an example of her faith. Involved in many organizations, she wanted to improve her local communities by supporting the arts and well-being of those around her. She gave significant time to the Ohio Valley Medical Center Auxiliary, Wheeling Symphony Auxiliary, YWCA Wheeling and ARTWORKS around town, in some cases holding executive positions.
Fannie was creative and always interested in trying something new. She earned her real estate license later in life and was always reading, painting, traveling and crafting. These pursuits also brought a variety of treasured friendships into her life. Fannie was especially gifted in the culinary arts and took great pleasure in cooking and entertaining.
Above all she loved her family and spending time with them. Fannie is survived by her children, Christina Mott and her husband, William, their children, Peter and David, of Chatham, NJ; Thomas Caruso and his son, Peter, of Columbus, OH; Vincent Caruso of Wheeling, WV; and Victoria Caruso and her partner, Tim Johnson, of Hilton Head Island, SC; her brothers, Stephen DeBerry, David DeBerry and his partner, Charles Taylor; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Caruso, Anna Caruso, Angela Romano; and many cousins, nephews, nieces and their families. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Peter Caruso; her parents, James and Margaret DeBerry; her brother, Michael DeBerry; her in-laws, Thomas and Mary Caruso; brothers-in-law, Michael Caruso, Vincent Caruso, Fred Caruso, Paul Romano; and sister-in-law, Lenora Caruso.
A visitation will be held for Fannie Caruso on November 22nd, from 6 PM to 8 PM at The Island Funeral Home and Crematory. A funeral mass will take place on November 23rd at 11 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, followed by inurnment at Six Oaks Cemetery, on Hilton Head Island. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Fannie Caruso’s life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to YWCA Wheeling, Heritage Library (of Hilton Head Island), Wounded Warrior Project or a similar organization.
