Memorial

Michael E. Brophy, a life-long Stony Point, a proud veteran and dedicated community member, passed away on November 12, 2024 from a service connected illness at Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Fitting that he would wait until the day after Veteran’s Day to enter eternity to be met by his bride and true love, Barbara (Nemeth). They were married on November 27, 1965, and they will get to celebrate their anniversary together. Barbara left this earth too early on September 25, 2000, and they are now reunited. His parents, John E. and Theresa Brophy and his cousin John A. Langdon, who was more like a brother to him met, him at the pearly gates.

He was born in Tuxedo, NY on August 7, 1942, to John E. and Theresa Brophy. Michael graduated from Haverstraw High School with the Class of 1960. He went on to serve honorably in the United States Navy aboard the USS Lester during the Cold War as a boiler tender, where he developed a lifelong commitment to service and camaraderie. Michael was an active lifetime member of the Haverstraw Elks and a member of the Leo Ladders American Legion Post 130, where he served as Commander many times, also served as the New York State Vice Commander for District #1 and #9. Michael also was Rockland County Commander of the American Legion. His leadership and dedication to veterans’ causes were evident in his involvement with the 40 & 8 Club as well as the Sons of the Revolution. He was able to go to Washington, DC with the Honor Guard last year. He was also an exempt member of Volunteer Hose #2 Fire Department in West Haverstraw and a member of the Statue of Liberty Destroyer Escort Association as well as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Michael had a few jobs in his life before finding his career at the US Postal Service, where he met friends that became his family. Michael retired in November 2007 after 30 years of service.

He is survived by his cherished daughter and caregiver, Erica (Billy) Brooks, and loving son Michael John (Jenn), his grandchildren, who meant the world to him, Alexandra and Connor Brooks and Sean and Gavin Brophy, who will remember him for his unwavering support and love. Michael leaves behind his companion of many years, Carol Anderson, cherished cousins Edward and Joseph Langdon, along with Gene Paul Larkin, his 3 nieces as well as Candice and Cassie Ludwig, who were “bonus granddaughters”.

Michael’s legacy of service and community involvement will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 from 4pm-8pm at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home, 71 N. Central Highway, Garnerville, NY, where family and friends can gather to honor Michael’s life and share their cherished memories. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, 10am at Immaculate Conception Church in Stony Point, NY followed by interment at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Haverstraw, NY.

Michael was an avid supporter of Donald J. Trump and entered eternity knowing that he cast his last vote and that the world will be a better place thanks to his vote.
