Elizabeth "Betty" Moran

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Elizabeth Anne (Betty) Moran, who died at the age of 98 in the company of her family on Saturday, November 16, 2024, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. 

Betty was born on March 31, 1926, in Amsterdam, New York to John and Cecelia Brooker Martin. She was a graduate of Amsterdam High School. Upon graduation she worked at Whelan’s Drug Store in Amsterdam and at one of the local factories assembling canteens for service members.  At Whelan’s she became acquainted with Frank Moran who came in to purchase items to send to his brother Roger Moran who was a pilot in the Army Air Transport Service. In 1944 Roger was on leave and went to Whelan’s to meet Betty. They went on one date, and he was sent to India for a year. They corresponded regularly and when Roger returned in 1945, he proposed to Betty. They were married within a month. Their marriage lasted for nearly 74 years until Roger passed away in 2019. 

Roger and Betty were a devoted couple. Family was the most important thing to them. They had six children together. The family made several trips together while the children were growing up that are still talked about today. Betty was a great cook and an excellent seamstress. Collecting dolls and making clothes for them was her passion. She was a member of the Home Bureau. 

Betty was very active in St, Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. She joined the church when she was 10 so that she could sing in the Junior Choir. She was a member of the adult choir throughout her adult life. She served as head of the Primary department at Sunday School, on the church council and as an active member of Faithful Followers. She and Roger led the Luther League program for teenagers in the church.  

Betty not only loved to sing in the choir at church. She was a member of the Mohawk Valley Chorus for many years. She and Roger also loved to dance. They were members of various Western dance clubs as well. They were avid tennis players into their eighties. 

Betty was predeceased by her husband, Roger, her sons David, Jeff, and Larry, her brother Arnold Martin, and her sisters Dorothy Argersinger and Beverly Demars. She is survived by Karen Kopf (Jeff), Tim Moran (Vicki), Matt Moran (Laureen) and daughters-in-law Terri Moran and Janice McCord (Bill). She is also survived by her grand-children Tucker Kopf (Nancy), Tyler Kopf (Inna), Amy Cordi (Dan), Lisa Brennan (Scott), Mike Moran (Betsy), Carrie Moran, Janée Farris (Jake), Kylee Moran (Kent), Aimée Moran, Christine May (Adam), and Christopher McCord (Liam). 

Betty is also survived by her great-grandchildren Theo Kopf, Mia Cordi, Jeffrey Brennan, Kai Brennan, Jake Moran, Hunter Moran, Avery Besaw, Harper Farris, Olivia Farris, Sophia Farris, Callie May and Shelbie May. 

Betty is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who think of her fondly as Aunt Betty. She was someone they could go to for advice, comfort and hugs. 

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the Betz, Rossi Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY, 12010 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 24 Pine St., Amsterdam, NY 12010. Betty will be laid to rest beside Roger at Pine Grove Cemetery, Mohawk Drive, Tribes Hill, NY, following the service at the church.
