Deacon Alfredo Soto

During the sunset hours of Monday, November 11th, Alfredo Soto peacefully passed away at his home in Matthews, NC. He was surrounded by his wife of 58 years, Irene, his two sons, Alfredo Jr. and Carlos, and two of his nine grandchildren, Victor and Andy.

Throughout his 86 years on Earth, Alfredo took advantage of every second of life. Leveraging his extensive aptitudes and accomplishments in economics, engineering and theology, Alfredo pursued his true passion in life, exploration. As a World Bank official for most of his career, Alfredo spent decades traveling to the farthest reaches of the globe to work with local economies, governments and communities to help people achieve better lives and a higher standard of living.

It was out of a similar dedication to humanity and his devotion to Jesus Christ that compelled Alfredo in the early1990s to explore the teachings of the Catholic Church. As Deacon Alfredo within the Archdiocese of Houston, this once young kid from a modest upbringing in Bogota, Colombia, spent over a decade serving the people of this and countless other communities until a recent decline in his health.

Diving headfirst with deep conviction into important work helping others was a hallmark that commonly defined him. Alfredo was an adventurer and a dedicated disciple of God committed to helping others achieve a better tomorrow.

He was affectionately known by loved ones as “Taita,” the indigenous Quechua word for father. And to those closest in proximity to his heart, Taita also meant husband, brother, son, teacher, friend and grandpa. Those whose lives he touched were left with an indelible mark and wonderful memories of a life well-loved and better lived.

Celebrate the life of Deacon Alfredo Soto this Saturday at 1:00 pm at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Mint Hill, NC. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to St. Luke’s.
