William Oscar Field

William “Bill” Oscar Field was born July 13, 1942 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Oscar Bradshaw Field and Frances Margaret Chatburn. He was the oldest of eight children and worked alongside his family to build a farm in Grand View, Idaho. He lived in many places during his life and eventually made his way home to retire by the serene Snake River in the Grand View Valley. He passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024 in Boise, Idaho after a brief stay at St. Luke’s hospital due to a recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. In his final days, he was surrounded by his wife, Susan, all of his children, many of his grandchildren, and siblings. It was a precious week for his loved ones to visit and reminisce. Many of his children took their first breaths at the same place he drew his last.

Bill loved learning and socializing! He graduated from High School in Grand View, Idaho in 1960 and attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah. He served in the North Scottish Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After graduating from college, he started a family and had many adventures! He was a farmer, salesman, and entrepreneur/businessman.  He started from scratch a few times throughout his life and kept a positive attitude. He has been described as a “blue sky” kind of guy. He often spoke of his love of God and Jesus and his gratitude for their plan of redemption and happiness. He had a beautiful bass singing voice and shared this talent at special events and with family and friends. How Great Thou Art was a favorite hymn.

He never met a stranger and his favorite things to talk about were his children and grandchildren. He loved to teach them and offer support, “Never give up” and “Next!” were some of his favorite ways to encourage them to persevere. Hosting “Hunter’s Camp” was a highlight for Bill - his freezer was always stocked with meat and all the ice cream one could eat! He loved driving through the mountains with his kids and grandkids. He cherished teaching his grandkids how to spot a herd of elk or husk an ear of corn. The classic “on the road” meal was Diet Pepsi and powdered donuts - every kid’s delight! He was larger than life, lived big, loved generously, always willing to lend a hand, give roadside assistance or deliver some fried chicken.

Bill married Susan Hadley Peterson in 2016 and they renewed their vows in the Logan, Utah temple on a lovely winter’s morning of 2018. They enjoyed their life together in the Grand View Valley with views of the Rimrocks, side by side rides, gardens, and their domestic and wild pets. “Country people don’t have to die to go to Heaven. We live there!” is how Bill described his home and community of friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.

Surviving are his siblings, Jean (Lloyd), Terry (Leslie), Howard, Mike (Debbie), Janet (Paris), Julie, and Pat (Lisa). 

His greatest legacy is his posterity of ten children and 36 grandchildren shared with Barbara Lynn Whitlock Winterrowd and Virginia Anne Lacey:

Mike (Mary): Matthew, Elinor, Charlotte, Alice, Henry.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rost Funeral Home, Mountain Home, Idaho, with a viewing Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 10:00 am and funeral service at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 37873 Highway 78, Grand View, Idaho, 83624. Burial at Riverside Cemetery, Grand View, Idaho.
