In Loving Memory
James Vance Watkins, 67, passed away on November 16, 2024, in Winnsboro, South Carolina. Born on July 5, 1957, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, he was the son of the late Walter Vance Watkins and Katherine E. (Rathlev) Watkins.
James graduated from A. C. Flora High School in Columbia, SC, and later earned an Associate’s degree in Accounting from Midlands Technical College. He dedicated many years to his career, working with the SC Department of Education and the SC Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism before spending the last 20 years at Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina. For more than a decade, he was a pivotal part of the PAI Division, where he was known for his reliability and commitment to his team members Charles, Bianca, and George.
A phenomenal and gifted musician, James discovered his love for the bass guitar at age 11. Self-taught in playing bass and keyboards and reading music, he played in numerous bands including Brother Blood, Alley Cat, Fresh Air, J. Michael Barber Band, and most recently, Split Decision. His witty personality, musical talent and passion for excellence made him a beloved band mate and brought joy to many throughout his 55 years as a musician.
As a faithful member of Northeast Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC, James’s faith was an important aspect of his life and he regularly played bass guitar in the church band. He is survived by his wife, Marcy Collins Watkins; daughter, Megan Elise Watkins; brother, Walter William Watkins (Janice); step-daughter, Breanna Moore; step-grandchildren, Brandon Wilmoth and Avarie Courts; and numerous cousins and other extended family members.
