...for the steadfast love of [the Lord] endures forever. Psalm 136:1

David Harold Hultgren was born June 6, 1945 in St Paul, MN to Harold Hultgren and Muriel Lorraine (Smith) Hultgren. The family moved to North St. Paul when David was 10 and he graduated from North High School in 1963. Attended the California Lutheran Bible School in 1965, graduation with a diploma in Biblical Studies. He then returned home to study at the University of Minnesota, graduating with distinction in 1969, earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then served two years in the US Army, stationed at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. In 1972, he was recruited to work for Child Evangelism Fellowship. He was a CEF missionary and managed their Christian bookstore in downtown St. Paul for 8 years. He then earned his Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in computer science from the University of Minnesota, where later worked as well. David also worked for Honeywell and Control Data, finishing his career at Sciencix (CTS), as the computer specialist, working there for 20 years before retiring at the age of 73.

David was a man of great faith and all who met him knew that. He was loyal, faithful and committed to teaching about Christ’s love. David was nurtured by his parents’ quiet faith. He believed that God is the creator, is powerful, and forgives people; he believed all that. He remembered  attending a Good News Club at age 7, when he put the pieces together and understood salvation. His faith grew in Sunday School, in “Luther League” youth group, and from the teachings of Pastor Harvey Carlson at Mount Carmel Lutheran Church in St. Paul. While in college, he taught Sunday School in the church’s ministry at the Roosevelt housing project, bringing youth with him in his little green convertible Sprite. In the army, he worked closely with the chaplain and even taught confirmation in a Lutheran Church in Salt Lake City.

After returning to Minnesota, after his military service, David became a founding member of Victory in Christ Lutheran Church in Maplewood.  There he preached regularly and served as worship leader, treasurer, secretary, board member, Bible study leader, Sunday school teacher, and in nearly every role, until its closing. He was the one to sell the building and close down things. After which, David became a regular attender of North Haven Church, where he served on their missions committee. He taught Bible studies in several locations for many, many years. He taught Release Time Religious Education in the St Paul public school system. He preached monthly at the Union Gospel Mission starting when he was a young man, and only stopping when Covid shut things down 50+ years later. He was unable to return to serve when his health failed dramatically in 2020. Requiring him to move out of his home of 60 years. At which time, he wholeheartedly joined the New Life Church Bible study when they began meeting in his assisted living home in Woodbury. David suffered from several major health problems, most notably prostate cancer. However, he never complained about his physical ailments! He passed away peacefully at his residence of four years, Wedgewood Central, on November 18, 2024. He was 79.

He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his sister Marjorie Christensen, niece Spring (Tim) Becker, and nephew Sky (Jennifer) Christensen.

His great nieces and great-nephews, Nathaniel (Jeannine) Becker, Emma Becker, Katherine Becker, Andrew David Christensen, Elijah Christensen, Ava Christensen, Alli Christensen, and others who became like family were permitted to call him “Uncle Mac,” as his family lovingly did.David's funeral was held at North Haven Church on December 9, 2024, 2240 15th Ave East, North Saint Paul, MN 55109.
