Glenn "Poppie" Davis Grable
January 1st, 1928 - November 16th, 2024
After 96 glorious years, Glenn “Poppie” Davis Grable passed away on Nov. 16, 2024, in Charlotte, NC. Glenn passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born on January 1, 1928, in Pittsburgh, PA, son of the late Russell and Hazel Grable, and predeceased by his three brothers, Dale, Russell, and Ronald. Glenn is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Patricia “Patty” Grable, children Mark Grable, Rebecca “Becky” Swetman, and Mary Ann Rosenblatt (son-in-law Ed Rosenblatt), grandchildren Megan Snyder, Leslie McFayden, Tate Rosenblatt, and Parker Rosenblatt, and great-grandchildren Kyleigh Egelhoff, Mackenna Snyder, and Alexis McFayden.
Glenn grew up in Pittsburgh until he enlisted in the Army and was based at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) in Fayetteville, NC. He was very proud of his service as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, frequently stating that he was “Airborne” and donning his service hat and “Airborne” sweatshirt. During his service, Glenn was an assistant to the Chaplain. Glenn and Patty met when he visited her family’s church, Hay Street United Methodist.
Glenn and Patty married in 1953 and moved to Pittsburgh, where Mark and Becky were born. Then in 1963, they moved to Buena Park, CA, where Mary Ann was born. Following the death of Patty’s father, they moved back to Fayetteville in 1972 to be closer to Patty’s mother. Glenn was a very active member of Hay Street United Methodist Church, including singing in the choir. After 44 years in Fayetteville, Glenn and Patty moved to Charlotte, NC to live with the Rosenblatts. In Charlotte, Glenn and Patty became active members of Matthews United Methodist Church, where they quickly made many new friends.
Glenn loved life, his family, church, singing, playing golf and his beloved Steelers. He was kind to everyone and wore his smile ear to ear. While we miss him terribly, we are comforted in knowing that he is in heaven surrounded by family and friends that predeceased him and most likely playing golf every day.
A memorial service to celebrate Glenn's life will be held on Saturday, November 30th at 2 pm, at the Matthews United Methodist Church (801 S. Trade St., Matthews, NC). Contributions in Glenn's honor can be made to Matthews UMC's capital campaign.
