Beers and Story - Palmer
Lucy Pelletiere
April 11th, 1936 - November 17th, 2024
Wilbraham - It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Lucy Pelletiere, 88, on November 17, 2024, 45 years to the day of her beloved husband, Robert. She was born on April 11, 1936 in Essex, England, the fifth and youngest born to the late Robert and Lucy (Signol) McGivern. A longtime resident of Ludlow and more recently Wilbraham, Lucy moved across the pond from England in 1965. A vibrant force from a young age, Lucy broke through many barriers, surviving the hardships of WWII in Scotland, later returning to London, secretly working for underwriters at Lloyd's of London when women weren't accepted in such roles. She met her soon-to-be husband Robert, a U.S. Air Force Military Police Officer, while working in West London. They eventually moved to the U.S. where they raised their three daughters. She was affectionately known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren alike as "Nanny", was an avid gardener with the greenest of thumbs, a lover of a piping hot cuppa tea (a continuous cuppa throughout the day!), a good game of cards with friends, a swim in the pool (and took much pride in teaching her grandchildren to swim!), and hosting many house parties through the decades. Her home was where everyone would naturally gravitate; she'd prepare the most delicious Sunday pot roasts, enough for whoever was sure to be passing through. Besides her parents, Lucy was preceded in death by her siblings, Edward, Bobby, Jean, and Helen (April 2024), and her oldest daughter, Beverly Barry (March 2024). She is survived by her daughter, Karen Smith and her husband Wayne, of Chesapeake, VA; daughter, Tracy Snyder of Martin, Georgia; six grandchildren, Cheryl, Elizabeth, Lisa, Gillian, Adam, and Samuel; and her seven great-grandchildren, Shailynn, Abryelle, Sammy, Adelaide, Effie, Lexi and Camden. We are incredibly grateful to the many neighbors, friends, volunteers, and caregivers who have shown their love and support both to Lucy in her final years, as well as to our family. A graveside service will be held on Thursday December 12, 2024 at 11:00am in Hillcrest Park Cemetery in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Baystate Health Foundation at Baystatehealth.org/giftsofgratitude or to Baystate Health Foundation, 280 Chestnut St., Springfield, MA 01199-1000.
