Manfred K Joeres, MD passed away at home with his loving wife Barbara at his side from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Manfred immigrated to the US from Germany when he was in his mid-teens. He lived through heavy bombing in Stuttgart as a small child, hiding in bomb shelters with his mother and younger siblings.

Settling in Baltimore after immigrating in the mid-50's, he completed his high school education there. Manfred started his college years at Western Maryland College, where he entered ROTC. Later, he graduated from medical school at the University of Maryland. Soon after that graduation, he enlisted into the Army's 2nd Battalion, 509 Infantry (airborne), working as their military physician. He had the good fortune to be stationed in Germany, so the first time he returned to his homeland, he was a US soldier. After discharge, he completed his Psychiatric residency in Seattle at the University of Washington. He then went into private practice for a few years before joining GHC in the early 1980’s, spending his later years in Olympia, WA. During these years, he married his first wife, Erika Berta in 1963 in Baltimore. Their beloved son, Stephan, was born in 1970. The marriage ended in divorce in 1974, but they continued to be good friends and collaboratively managed the raising of their son.

In late 1986, Manfred met his future second wife, Barbara K Burke. They were married in 1990 and shared a wonderful life together. Since his mother had returned to Germany, they visited her every year and took side trips into other European countries.

Manfred and Barbara both took early retirements so they could travel in new directions.  Manfred worked as a traveling locum tenens in Auckland, NZ and Tasmania, Australia.  They got a timeshare in Kihei, Maui and enjoyed trips there with each other and occasionally with their children and grandchildren.  They traveled to Oaxaca and Cuernavaca to study Spanish.  They commissioned the building of a custom boat designed by Devlin Designing and reveled in cruising into the San Juan and Gulf Islands for several years. They bought a winter home in Peoria , AZ and spent 12 years as snowbirds. They jointly participated in book clubs in WA and AZ.  He continued to work at Olympia GHC when he was in town during the early years of his retirement.

Manfred was proceeded in death by his parents, Friedrich Karl Joeres and Hildegard Charlotte Joeres; his sister, Dagmar Miller and his ex-wife Erika Broska. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Barbara K Burke; beloved son Stephan Joeres; brothers Erhard Joeres and Peter Joeres; stepsons Brent (Denise) Burke (children Zach and Haley) and Derrick (Lea Anne) Burke (children Lora and Terra).

A Celebration of Life will be held at Funeral Alternatives in Tumwater, WA in late March/early April. Notice will be given by his wife.
