Karl Otto Leuthner
May 2nd, 1929 - December 6th, 2024
Karl Otto Leuthner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024, in Arlington, Virginia. He was 95 years old.
Karl was born on May 2, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Wilhelm and Elsa Leuthner (née Schneider). Raised in Frankfurt, Karl embarked on a remarkable journey that would take him across continents. In 1951, he immigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina where he met his wife Cora Elsa Schreiber. Together, they began a family after immigrating to the United States, welcoming their daughter Helen Elsa Leuthner and later their son Robert Alfred Leuthner. After 13 years of marriage, he was preceded in death by Cora.
He found love again with Ana Lia Alvarado, whom he married in 1966. Together, Karl and Ana Lia raised Helen and Robert and welcomed their youngest daughter, Denise. Karl and Ana Lia were married 54 years, raising their three children in Laurel Hollow, New York.
Karl had a successful career working in Manhattan for WMF and Schott Zweisel Glass. After retiring, he and Ana Lia embraced new chapters of life in Fearrington Village, North Carolina, and later in Reston, Virginia. They ultimately settled at The Jefferson in Arlington, Virginia, to be closer to family.
Karl is survived by his daughter Helen Leuthner of Lake Grove, New York; his son Robert Leuthner and his wife Lilli of Weinheim, Germany; and his daughter Denise Haselhorst and her husband Darin of Falls Church, Virginia. He was a proud and loving grandfather to five beautiful grandchildren: Marta, Moritz, Jonas, and Paula Leuthner, and his youngest granddaughter, Ella Haselhorst.
Karl cherished the many close friendships he and Ana Lia cultivated over the years, connecting with friends across the globe. He was known for his passion for gardening, travel, wines from across the world and his Argentine barbeques, where he loved entertaining friends, colleagues, and family. A businessman and lifelong learner, Karl was an avid reader who enjoyed the Wall Street Journal nearly every day.
Karl will be remembered for his sharp intellect, warm spirit, and the love he shared with all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, kindness, and devotion to family and friends.
