May Satsuki Yamada, 92, a beloved Colorado native, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at her home with her family by her side. Born in May 1932 in Erie, Colorado, May was the daughter of Yukino and Kikutaro Mayeda. She grew up on the family farm outside of Longmont with her four older brothers, two older sisters, and one younger sister. On the farm she developed a strong work ethic and a deep love for sports, playing basketball and baseball with her brother, George. May graduated from Longmont High School in 1950 and soon after helped out her brother, Takashi at his dental practice in Denver. In 1958 she met and married her husband of 45 years, William Yamada. Together they worked at the family grocery store living near Denver’s City Park and started a new family. After their four kids were born the family moved in 1966 to their dream house in Wheat Ridge. Life at the Yamada house meant weekend fishing trips throughout Colorado and Wyoming in the cool green station wagon, skiing with extended family followed by a fun night of food and card games, and most importantly, family get-togethers at the Mayeda Farm.
After selling the family grocery store in 1975, May embarked on a new career working in the airline industry allowing her to pursue her passion for adventure and travel. She had an affection for shopping in Hong Kong, a place that held a special place in her heart. Upon retiring from United Airlines, May devoted herself fully to her family. Selfless and nurturing, she found joy in spending time with her five grandchildren, attending their school and sporting events, or even just getting a bite to eat, with unwavering support and excitement.
May’s other interests included walking, crocheting, ping-pong, bowling, and playing games. She was a night owl, often up late watching the news or planning her next day’s activities in her Hallmark calendar. Throughout her life, May’s sense of humor and love for fun shined brightly. She enjoyed practical jokes and was known for organizing Christmas scavenger hunts that brought joy and laughter to her family. In her later years, she became an enthusiastic collector of treasures from nature – rocks, leaves, and flowers, Barbie dolls, Beanie Babies, coins, and even miniature cars.
May’s character was defined by her strength, courage, and generosity. She firmly believed that nothing was out of reach and found great satisfaction in helping others. She was known for her loyalty, commitment, and hard work ethic that brought her a sense of pride and achievement in everything she did. She provided for her children and grandchildren so they can have all the things she didn’t. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her humility and gratefulness for all that life has given her.
May is survived by her four children: Gwyn Hasegawa (Kerry Hasegawa), Mara Hill (Rick Hill), Niles Yamada (Kim Beacom), and Joy Yamada (Brian Coover); five grandchildren: Sarah Hill (Andre Bernardes), Lisa Hasegawa, Adam Hasegawa (Brittany), Ethan Yamada, and Josh Coover; and three great-grandchildren: Logan Hasegawa, Peyton Hasegawa, and Kendall Hasegawa. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Yamada, and her seven siblings: Takashi Mayeda, Johnny Mayeda, Robert Mayeda, Mary Tono, George Mayeda, Martha Nishida, and Ruby Tanaka.
A special acknowledgement to our family and friends for their love, encouragement, and support during this difficult time. A Celebration of May’s Life will be held at a later date.
