Hipolito Adolfo Marte
September 27th, 1935 - December 10th, 2024
Hipólito A. Marte was born on September 27, 1935, to Hipólito Marte Sr. and Delia P. Villanova, in the sunlit plains and coastal breezes of Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic.
The young boy, who in his youth was no doubt shy and unassuming, would eventually grow up to become a God-fearing man—pious, of quiet conviction. His absolute joy was in standing at the pulpit—his deep, sonorous voice rising and falling to the pulse of inspiration. A preacher man through and through, he relished the chance to share what he knew from those worn, dog-eared, marked-up pages of his old King James Bible.
There was a hymn he used to sing, written in 1874, called “Master, the Tempest is Raging.” It recalls an experience of Christ and His disciples, where a storm threatened to capsize their boat. Panicked, the disciples pled for their lives, momentarily abandoning their faith. But Jesus, with calm authority, rose to rebuke the wind, saying, “Peace, be still”—and surely the storm ceased.
The lesson within the hymn is one of trust in divinity, even amidst life’s most turbulent storms. Like most of us, Hipólito was not unfamiliar with such storms. But his faith was the anchor that steadied him.
