Mr. Robert “Bobby” Cooper Elkins, Jr., 80, of Rock Hill, SC, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024 in Lexington, SC, where he has resided for the past 6 years. Visitation and Memorial services will start at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec 22, 2024, at Thompson Funeral Home in Lexington, SC, with the Rev. Joel Brantner officiating and concluding at 6 p.m. A graveside service will follow on Monday, Dec 23, 2024 at noon at Forest Hills Cemetery in Rock Hill, SC.
A native of Rock Hill, S.C., Mr. Elkins was the son of the late Robert Cooper, Sr. and Lucy Grey Lineberger Elkins. He lettered in football, baseball and basketball at Rock Hill High School. He attended the University of South Carolina and Gardner-Webb College and served 6 years in the Army National Guard. His professional career was spent as an electrician and foreman for Walker Electric of Rock Hill and Hunter Bros and Hunter Specialties in the low country of South Carolina. His career spanned nearly 40 years. Mr. Elkins also spent time in Conway and James Island, SC before settling in Moncks Corner in 1982, to raise his family. Mr. Elkins loved anything to do with water including: fishing, shrimping, boating, swimming, skiing, and quite possibly his favorite pastime, eating seafood. He loved playing and watching sports, especially his Gamecocks. He was also a beloved baseball coach for many seasons.
Mr. Elkins is survived by his wife, Mary Westerlund Elkins of the home; his son, Michael Elkins (Jessica Elkins) of Lexington, SC; and his daughter, Suzanne Dobson (Bobby Parker) of Westminster, SC; his brothers, Tommy Elkins (Susie Elkins) of Monroe, NC and Miles Elkins (Pat Elkins) of Rock Hill, SC; and 5 grandchildren, Suzi Burrell (Tanner Burrell), Zane Dobson of Westminster and Jack, Jennings and Mila Elkins of Lexington. Mr. Elkins was predeceased by his brothers, Charlie Elkins (Beckie Elkins) and Johnny Elkins and grandchild, Allison Elkins. He also had many nieces and nephews whom he loved.
Memorials may be made in Mr. Elkins' name to Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, 5503 Sunset Blvd. Lexington, SC 29072 or the charity of your choice.
