Ralph Lee Lewis
September 8th, 1938 - December 21st, 2024
"When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him lies on the paths of men." --Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
In loving memory of Ralph Lee Lewis, who passed away peacefully on December 21, 2024, in Arlington, VA, with close family nearby. Born on September 8, 1938, in New Kent, VA, Ralph was a beacon of positivity and inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Ralph was a man whose work ethic was unparalleled and whose integrity was the foundation of his every action. Throughout his life, he displayed an infectious positive attitude, making him a cherished figure in the communities he served. Ralph's journey began in Williamsburg, VA, where he started working earnestly at the age of 16, taking on roles as diverse as painting houses, dynamiting tree stumps, and managing maintenance at The College of William & Mary. His desire for a new scene led him to Washington, D.C., and eventually to the City of Falls Church, where he dedicated 27 years to the Environmental Services Department, earning accolades such as Employee of the Year in 1992.
Beyond his work, Ralph found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a soulful singer, captivated by the rhythms of Motown, Soul, and Blues, and shared his love of music in bands during his youth as well as in the living room with his children on his days off. His humor and insight shone through in his telling (and retelling) of stories, often filled with little bits of wisdom or details too unreal to believe, crafted from his rich tapestry of life experiences. Loyal to his beloved Dallas Cowboys, Ralph enjoyed watching and talking about sports. He could not stand to be stagnant and would spend many mornings walking for miles across Bailey’s Crossroads and around the heart of the City of Falls Church. He enjoyed cooking and in his earlier years, fishing, and above all, spending time with friends and family, weaving laughter into every gathering.
Ralph was a dedicated husband to Jeanine Hobart Lewis (nee Frye) and a devoted father to Lisa Andrea Lewis and Jelena Mielle Chargel (nee Lewis). He deeply cherished his role as a grandfather to Sebastian Michael Chargel, whom he doted on with unwavering pride.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Advent Funeral and Cremation Services (located at 7211 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA 22046). Following the viewing, a small service will provide family and friends the opportunity to share their memories and celebrate Ralph's life. The service will conclude at 5:00 PM.
Ralph leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, humor, and an enduring commitment to others. In the hearts of the many who were privileged to know him, his influence and memory will continue to inspire and guide. His life was a testament to the power of positivity and the profound impact of genuine human connection.
