Chantkhan Preap was born in Pursat, Cambodia on October 26th, 1957. Throughout his life, Chantkhan would go to school wherever his father was stationed at, as he was a Commander in the Royal Cambodian Army. Chantkhan participated in many activities growing up, such as soccer. After Chantkhan graduated High School at the age of 18, the Khmer Rouge Regime took over Cambodia. He survived the genocide that was known as the Killing Fields.
At the age of 22 years old, Chantkhan was sponsored by the Harmon family. They brought Chantkhan and his family to the United States in 1980. Residing in Collbran, CO he lived and worked on the Harmon’s family farm. After several years in Collbran and Grand Junction, Chantkhan moved his family to Denver where he found employment working at Mullen High school and eventually with Denver Public Schools in their English as a Second Language (ESL) department. After years of hard work, he found his true calling. He became a Cambodian professional interpreter and translator. He enjoyed his work and would remain dedicated to the role for decades, working with many organizations such as the courts, hospitals, immigration, and other forms of service.
Chantkhan worked endlessly providing services for his community. Faced with constant hardships, he continued to persevere relentlessly. Aided by his motorized scooter, he continued to thrive and remained available to his wife, family, friends and community. He always navigated through life’s challenges with humility and a smile on his face. Chantkhan had a strong soul and loved the members of the Khmer community. Chantkhan will be remembered as someone who helped many people.
Chantkhan loved watching the Denver Broncos play. He enjoyed listening to Khmer Music like Sin Sisamuth. Chantkhan loved talking to everyone that would lend an ear and always gave his best ‘dad’ jokes. Most of all, he loved spending time with his wife.
He is survived by Sreyma Sim (Wife), Collbran Preap, Daleeny Preap, Rathana Preap, Manyrith Preap (Children), Devon Martinez, Jordan Martinez (Grandchildren) and extended family. He is preceded in death by Luos Preap (Father), Eng May (Mother), and Sokhet Preap (Son). He was an incredible father, husband, brother and friend. You will be truly missed and loved, Pa.
