With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Curtis Baker, a cherished member of the Mud Hole Custom Tackle and Foundation Outdoor Group, Inc. family, a guiding light in the rod-building community, and a friend to countless individuals. Curt passed away yesterday, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of craftsmanship, mentorship, and heartfelt connections.

Curtis Baker was more than a master rod builder—he was a passionate teacher, a loving husband, experienced fishing man, and a true friend. His journey into rod building began at a young age, inspired by his grandfather and nurtured by a dedicated shop teacher. Over the course of 60 years, Curt’s passion blossomed into a lifetime commitment to the art of crafting custom fishing rods and sharing his expertise with others.

A true innovator, Curt was known for his unmatched craftsmanship and relentless pursuit of excellence. Famous for creating “bad-ass fishing rods for bad-ass fishermen,” as proudly displayed on his shirt, he brought the same enthusiasm to his own fishing adventures in his beloved Tampa, Florida waters. Curt continually refined his techniques and developed new, simple methods to teach others, embodying his belief that the joy of rod building is best shared. His dedication to the craft and his students was boundless.

Curt’s commitment to building community led to the founding of the Suncoast Rod Crafters in St. Petersburg, Florida. For over three decades, his free workshops—whether held in his garage, local tackle shops, or community centers—brought together rod builders of all skill levels from across the eastern United States. These gatherings reflected Curt’s generous spirit, fostering collaboration, learning, and camaraderie. His leadership extended to the Rod Crafter’s Guild, later the Custom Rod Builders Guild, where his contributions, from published articles to live educational events, earned him the distinguished title of Legacy Member.

In his later years, Curt reached a national audience as a lead instructor for the Mud Hole Custom Tackle education program. For over a decade, he shared his passion for rod building with tens of thousands of students through in-person and virtual classes throughout the USA and Internationally. Curt’s ability to simplify complex techniques - along with his calm, encouraging demeanor - made him a beloved instructor and a pillar of the rod-building education community. Known for his positivity and generosity, Curt often stayed late to help students complete their rods, ensuring each left with a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Curt’s influence transcended his local community, making him a sought-after presenter at national and international workshops and seminars. His expertise in cross wraps, weaves, marbling, inlays, and laser engraving cemented his reputation as a master craftsman and teacher. His contributions have inspired thousands of anglers and rod builders worldwide, leaving a legacy that will endure for generations.

Though Curt’s time with us feels all too brief, his impact is immeasurable. His spirit lives on in the rods he crafted, the students he mentored, and the friendships he cultivated. To his loving wife, Bonnie, and all who were fortunate to know him, we offer our deepest sympathies and gratitude for sharing such an extraordinary person with the world.

Tight lines and tight wraps, Mr. Baker. Until we meet again.
