In Loving Memory

The term “G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time)” is used frequently by many, but our Father/Grandpa truly was. He dedicated his life caring for and being the ultimate family man.

Danny Edsel Nelson was born on November 27, 1947, to Edsel J. and Mary Nelson in Salt Lake City, Utah and was the oldest of four brothers. Danny graduated from Granger High School in 1966. He met the love of his life, Pauline and they were married for 53 years. They raised three kids in their South Jordan, Utah home, had six beautiful grandchildren and are expecting their first great grandchild. Danny worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for over 40 years as a locomotive engineer and served in the U.S. Army Reserve for six years. However, his true passion was coaching baseball and even with his career he always prioritized time at the ballpark.

Danny loved baseball, both as a fan and a coach. He guided players on and off the field and built many lifelong friendships through the sport he cherished and took immense pride in. One of his greatest achievements was coaching his son Burke and grandsons, Pepper and Copper, from kindergarten all the way through college, sharing his love for the game with them.

He loved many things in life: good music, a good drink, and a great party. He was an amazing singer, a skilled guitarist and a passionate concert goer. He could often be found standing in concert pits, singing along to his favorite songs and learning every lyric by heart.

Danny was the life of the party, always the one to keep spirits high, and kept the laughter flowing. His zest for life extended to capturing memories, always taking photos of him and his loved ones to preserve every moment, big and small. He loved life and lived it to the fullest.

Above all, Danny loved his family. He treasured family vacations, boating, game nights, birthdays, holidays, and any gathering that brought everyone together. He taught us there is nothing more important in life than the love and bonds we share.

Danny left this world surrounded by those he loved most on December 24, 2024. While our hearts ache with his loss, we find solace in knowing he is now reunited with his beloved wife, Pauline, whom he missed deeply since her passing in May 2024. Reuniting, they celebrated their first heavenly Christmas together, a testament to the enduring love they shared. They are now our guardian angels, guiding us through every moment for the rest of our lives.

Danny’s legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, coach, and friend—a man who lived fully and loved deeply. He will be missed every day.

He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Pauline M. Nelson, his parents Edsel J. and Mary Nelson.

He is survived by his children Dani, Julie, and Burke (Megan). Six grandchildren Pepper Hansen (Savannah), Mary Caitlin (Jacob) and soon-to-be-born great grandchild, Copper Hansen (Juliette), Willow Breeze, Danika Nelson, and Mckall Nelson. Siblings Jimmy Nelson (Jeanee), Brad Nelson (Shelly), and Joe Nelson (Deb).

There will be a joint Celebration of Life for him and Pauline M. Nelson on January 4th, from 4-8PM at the Asher Adams Hotel 2 South 400 West, Salt Lake City, Utah (the Union Pacific Depot)
