Norma Jean Ragsdale
June 29th, 1931 - December 22nd, 2024
Norma Jean Ragsdale was born on June 29, 1931, to David Beetem, an engineer, and Ksenia (Proskouriakoff) Beetem, a physician, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Norma lived in Oregon from the age of 10, when her family moved to Portland.
She attended college at the University of Oregon in Eugene and obtained a bachelor’s degree. In her senior year at university, she married Tom Ragsdale, a veteran, who was obtaining his degree in education. The couple then taught high school in Medford for two years, before returning to Eugene where Tom continued to teach, and coach track, while Norma raised their children, Brent, Donie, and Bob. She later returned to the U of O, earning a masters in counseling and education.
In the early 1970’s, Norma became a volunteer counselor and psychotherapist at Lane County Mental Health Clinic. She was a talented therapist and soon was hired as a full-time staff member. With a natural aptitude for leadership, she quickly became a supervisor in several programs at Mental Health. Toward the end of her career, she was the Human Resources Counselor for all Lane County employees.
Norma had a natural elegance, radiant smile, and a generous spirit. People were drawn to her charismatic personality, and she made lifelong friends wherever she went. She was balanced, and pragmatic, known for her warmth and understanding. Unfailingly honest, she was unafraid to address difficult issues, but always in a compassionate and insightful way.
In retirement, she enjoyed gardening, socializing with friends, and was a voracious reader. Despite the steady progression of Alzheimer's over the last few years she always retained her optimistic and cheerful attitude. She died peacefully at home, on December 22, at the age of 93, with her son Bob, and her longtime companion, Ed Shiman in attendance.
Norma is survived by her son Bob (Alison) Ragsdale of Virginia. She was predeceased by her daughter Donia Ragsdale, and her son Brent Ragsdale.
At her request, no service is planned. No flowers please, but donations to Eugene Blood Bank would be appreciated, an organization that Norma supported all her life.
