Charles R. Heyward passed away peacefully at home into the arms of his Savior on December 29, 2024.

 

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda Weathersbee Heyward; daughters Martha Heyward Darley (Chris) and Melinda C. Heyward; and grandchildren Peyton, Parker and Anna Claire Darley. 

 

He was born in Rockingham, NC to Thomas Savage Heyward and Mary E. McDaniel Heyward and was a direct descendant of Thomas Heyward, signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Agnes Johns, and his brother Thomas Savage Heyward, Jr. He is survived by his sister, Deborah H. Smith (Gerald).

 

Charles joined the South Carolina Army National Guard serving in the Field Artillery Brigade in Sumter, SC in 1965, serving honorably until his retirement in 1991 as Tactical Communication Chief, Master Sergeant (E8). During his service he was awarded numerous medals and was activated to support law enforcement during Hurricane Hugo.

 

Charles was self-employed in the battery business and later with Snap-on-Tools. He finished his career after 26 years as an Investigator with the SC Department of Consumer Affairs.

 

Charles, an avid Gamecock fan, was a man of many skills and talents, including cooking   (shopping included), landscaping and construction with his cohorts, Earl and Sharon Brissett. He was always eager to help, before being asked …. whether it be construction at Woods Edge, preparing for youth groups, or mopping a floor.

 

Interment, with military honors, will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025 at 12:00 PM at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, South Carolina 29229. 

 

A memorial service will be held on January 10, 2025 at 2:30 PM at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 5637 Bush River Rd, Columbia, SC 29212. Visitation will be held prior to and following the service.

 

Memorials may be made to Hope Force International, 7065 Moores Lane, Suite 200

Brentwood, TN 37027 which lovingly served in the flood of 2015 or to Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 5637 Bush River Rd, Columbia, SC 29212.
