Steve Whissen
March 5th, 1952 - June 27th, 2020
Steven (Steve) R. Whissen passed away peacefully at his Littleton home on June 27, 2020. He was 68. Steve graduated from Arvada West High School in 1970 then attended Colorado State University and received his teaching certification and undergraduate degree in history in 1975. He returned to CSU and received a master†™s degree in historic preservation. He was hired by the State of Wyoming with the State historic Preservation Office monuments and markers program, and then with the Department of Environmental Quality, abandoned mines program. Steve joined the National Park Service (NPS) Denver Service Center in 1990 and recently retired with 30 years of service as a Cultural Resource Specialist in the planning division. He worked on multiple projects that included a diverse array of research, planning and environmental compliance documentation to support the NPS mission of stewardship. These projects allowed him to travel to many wonderful parks and places throughout the U.S. Steve will also be remembered for his passion of folk and traditional music. While in Ft. Collins, he was a member of the Storm Mountain Folk Dance Company. Also, a fine guitar player, Steve performed songs for a variety of events. He traveled to Scotland last year to immerse himself in its history and its music. Steve is survived by his two sons, Bryson (Jacki) and Sean, his mother Marge, sisters Gail Smith (Randy) and Patty, nieces Laura and Michelle, and many cousins and their families. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Whissen. He will also be missed by his dear companions, friends and co-workers who loved his music and his wonderful pies.
