Barbara Fink Solomon, 90, formerly of Johnstown, NY, and of Gloversville, NY, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at the Wesley Health Care Nursing Home in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Barbara was born on April 14, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late Irving Fink and Fay R. Fink. Barbara was the second Fink child of three, joining her older brother, Jerry Fink, and followed by younger brother, Barry Fink. She had a wonderful childhood in New York City.

Following high school, Barbara earned the first of her two Master's degrees at Queens College of the City University of New York. She then began her career as a classroom teacher in lower New York.

While attending an open-air concert at Tanglewood with several of her friends, she caught the eye of a young man, a veteran of the Korean conflict, who was in the row behind her with some of his friends. Family lore is that he did everything possible to catch her attention, and ultimately succeeded. That young man, Marvin L. Solomon, became the love of her life, and they married on January 31, 1960. It was a beautiful and loving marriage that lasted 57 years, until Marvin’s passing during 2017.

Barbara and Marvin settled in Gloversville, NY near Marvin’s parents. Barbara continued her teaching career with the Johnstown School District. She ultimately earned an additional Masters degree specializing in reading and speech. Barbara always sought out the most challenging corners of the school community to serve, and was passionate about reading. In addition to her classroom work, Barbara also taught adult reading, and was asked to lead development of new more modern New York State curriculum for teaching reading. She was recognized and received awards from the US Department of Education, and the New York State Department of Education, receiving certificates of appreciation, presentations, and other honors. Barbara was a fervent reader until the end, as evidenced by hundreds of books in her personal library.

She was also an amazing cook and loved to entertain.  With her four men in the household to feed, Barbara’s kitchen was always busy, and her range of cuisines was diverse. She maintained a collection of well over 150 cook books, as well as keeping many family recipes and experimenting to create new variations.  One was not allowed to leave a visit with Barbara hungry. She created many memories for family and friends, gathering in her kitchen and dining room.

Barbara is survived by her three sons, Neal J. (Dr. Robin M.) Solomon, Dr. Frederick E.   (Dr. Danielle M.) Solomon, and Brian M. (Michelle, M.) Solomon, by her older brother, Commander (Jerry) Jerome I. (Nelda) Fink, USN-retired, and three granddaughters; Willow M. Solomon, Lily S. Solomon, and Ayla J. Solomon who were the lights of her life. She also leaves behind beloved nieces, Judith (Judy) Finkle and Terry (Fink) Miles; nephews, Arthur Finkle, Bruce Finkle, Bob Finkle, David Fink, and Kevin Fink, by her beloved sister in-law, Nelda Fink, a great many close friends, cousins, and extended family members.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Irving and Fay Fink, and by her younger brother Barry Fink, as well as by her beloved brother in-law, Charles Finkle and sister in-law, Marilyn (Solomon) Finkle.

A funeral service for Barbara will take place on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at Knesseth Israel Synagogue, 34 East Fulton Street, Gloversville, NY, where she has been a member since moving to Gloversville. Burial will follow immediately at the Knesseth Israel Cemetery, Clyde Street, Gloversville, NY.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in Barbara’s honor may be made to The Gloversville Public Library, 58 E. Fulton Street, Gloversville, NY 12078, to be directed to enhancing children’s love of reading. We are sure that Barbara would be thrilled to know that people have honored her, by promoting one of her greatest passions, bringing the joy of reading to children. Barbara’s family suggests that the next time you enjoy reading something, please take a moment to smile, think of Barbara, and her passion for bringing the joys of literacy and reading to others.  She will know, and we will be forever grateful to her.
